Kaleb Barker leads Troy to 35-7 victory at Akron
AKRON, Ohio — Kaleb Barker threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Troy dominated the final three quarters to roll to a 35-7 victory over Akron on Saturday.

Troy (2-1) opened the scoring when Barker passed to AJ Lewis from the 8. Akron responded when Kato Nelson nailed Maverick Wolfley on a 21-yard scoring strike with 19 seconds left in the first quarter. It was all Troy after that as Barker passed to Khalil McClain for one score and ran it in from the 9 for another to take a 21-7 lead at the break. DK Billingsley crashed in from the 1 early in the third quarter and Barker tossed to Bret Clark from the 11 for another score late in the third.

Barker finished with 202 yards passing and 42 yards on the ground. Billingsley totaled 101 yards on 21 carries.

If the Trojans were feeling good off their 43-14 takedown of Campbell three weeks ago, that ride came to an abrupt end. Troy didnt finish too far behind, but the team still lost 47-42 to So. Miss last week. Troy was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as So. Miss apparently hadnt forgotten their loss the last time these teams played, back in Sept. of 2016.

2019 MAC Football Week 4 Game Recap: Troy Trojans defeat the Akron Zips, 35-7 final score

Troy will open Sun Belt Conference play against Arkansas State next Saturday. The Zips will face Massachusetts next week.

Troy have been homebodies their last two matches, but they are heading out on Saturday. They will take on Akron at 3 p.m. ET at Summa Field at InfoCision Stadium. Troy is the favorite here — although they were the favorites in this last matchup, too, so the odds might count for a little less.

Later in the second quarter and second half, Troy was able to establish itself and pull away to earn the victory. Troys QB Kaleb Barker led the Trojan attack, throwing for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Troy RB DK Billingsley led the Trojans ground game with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Barker — the reigning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week — threw touchdown passes of 8 yards to A.J. Lewis, 2 yards to Khalil McClain and 11 yards to Bret Clark as the Trojans (2-1) scored 28 unanswered points to end the game. He completed 25 of 33 passes for 202 yards, and also ran for a 9-yard touchdown.

Troy did score in the first quarter to take 7-0 lead but Akrons defense was rock-solid in the first quarter after that, forcing two punts and then causing a takeaway on another drive, an interception by the Zips Shawn Featherstone.

Running back DK Billingsley, playing in place of the injured B.J. Smith, added 101 yards and a 1-yard touchdown rushing. The Trojans outgained the Zips 473 yards to 253.

Akron answered Troys touchdown with a touchdown of its own. Akrons Kato Nelson threaded the ball nicely through coverage to hit TE Maverick Wolfley for a 21-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7.

Akron (0-4) scored its only points of the game on a 19-yard pass from Kato Nelson to Maverick Wolfley at the end of the first quarter. That made the score 7-7, but Troy dominated from there.

Akrons punter Jonah Wieland showed improvement for a second week in a row, dramatically increasing his average to 46 yards per punt, including a 59-yarder which pinned Troy back at its own four.
