Zang was briefly held in the Potter County jail on a $7,500 bond Friday. Drain says he bailed out later in the day.
AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) – The Amarillo Police Department says a captain on the force has been arrested and charged for unlawful disclosure or promotion of intimate visual material.
Amarillo Police Sgt. Carla Burr says the charge, a state jail felony, can involve photos or other visual recordings.
Officers arrested Cpt. Jason Zang, 57, on a warrant Friday following the original March 7 complaint. An investigation led by the Texas Rangers and APD detectives is ongoing.
Documents filed by prosecutors said Zang met a woman on Craigslist and she sent him naked photos during the romantic relationship that followed. The woman eventually wanted to end the affair, but Zang continued to contact her.
Amarillo Chief Ed Drain held a press conference on Friday afternoon to expand on and answer questions regarding the crime.
Captain Zhang had had a relationship with this woman, and she had voluntarily provided him with photos of herself for his viewing only. Its alleged that he sent these photographs to other people.
Zang has been charged with disclosing intimate material and was booked into the Potter County Detention Center. His bond recommendation is for $7,500.
Zang has also been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of an internal investigation.
We do have to keep in mind that he has been charged, he has not been found guilty. He is entitled to due process, both on the criminal side and on the administrative side, because were also doing an administrative investigation, said Chief Drain. If these allegations turn out to be true, then this is disappointing, it is a stain on all of law enforcement, theres no question about that.
Zang has been with the Amarillo Police Department since 1990 and is assigned to the Service Division, according to a press release issued by the department.
