Shelton said Brown pulled up in front of the store and then went inside. He later exited and got back in his car.

Officials believe the suspect and the victim know each other. Investigators also learned that the victim was driving a car that was reported stolen during a robbery back in December.

A short time later, another man, who was wearing all black, walked up to the victim’s vehicle. The victim opened the door and the two began to fight.

Officers arrived shortly before midnight Sunday to find a man shot. Police say the victim exited the Omar Discount Store and was sitting in his vehicle when an unknown man dressed in black approached him.

The suspect pulled a revolver from his pocket and shot Brown twice. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Shelton also said detectives discovered the victim was driving a vehicle which was reported stolen in a robbery in December 2017.

Investigators say the victim, 50-year-old Reginald Brown, was driving a vehicle reported stolen in December.

“Clearly the victim and the suspect had some type of history. The fact that the victim was driving a stolen vehicle leads to more questions,” Shelton said. “A family will wake up this morning with terrible news that a loved one was killed.”

The homicide is Birmingham’s 13th so far in 2018 and the 18th in all of Jefferson County. Earlier Sunday, about 1 p.m., a 17-year-old male was fatally shot in  a northeast Jefferson County subdivision. The sheriff’s office is investigating that slaying.

Police from Birmingham’s north precinct arrived on scene and found Brown inside the car. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Police later learned that the car was reported stolen during a robbery that took place in December 2017.
