North Precinct officers were dispatched about 11:30 p.m. to Omar Discount Store on 12th Court North on a report of a man who had been shot, said Sgt. Bryan Shelton. When they arrived, they found the victim inside of his vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Reginald Brown. He was 50.
Birmingham man killed in fight outside store identified
Shelton said Brown pulled up in front of the store and then went inside. He later exited and got back in his car.
A short time later, another man, who was wearing all black, walked up to the victim’s vehicle. The victim opened the door and the two began to fight.
The suspect pulled a revolver from his pocket and shot Brown twice. The suspect fled the scene on foot.
Shelton also said detectives discovered the victim was driving a vehicle which was reported stolen in a robbery in December 2017.
“Clearly the victim and the suspect had some type of history. The fact that the victim was driving a stolen vehicle leads to more questions,” Shelton said. “A family will wake up this morning with terrible news that a loved one was killed.”
The homicide is Birmingham’s 13th so far in 2018 and the 18th in all of Jefferson County. Earlier Sunday, about 1 p.m., a 17-year-old male was fatally shot in a northeast Jefferson County subdivision. The sheriff’s office is investigating that slaying.
Police from Birmingham’s north precinct arrived on scene and found Brown inside the car. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Police later learned that the car was reported stolen during a robbery that took place in December 2017.
