Monday-night gunfire in Birmingham wounds 2 juveniles, kills 2 teens

nBirmingham police are investigating two separate shootings Monday night that left two children injured and two other victims dead.

One of the shootings happened in the 1200 block of 12th Avenue North in the Fountain Heights community.

In the Roosevelt area, a shooting took place in the 5000 block of Sugar Ray Drive, an 8-year-old and a 16-year-old were wounded in a separate shooting. Their condition is not known at this time.

Lt. Joe Roberts said police responded to the 12th Avenue scene on a report of shots fired. When they arrived, the found a black male and a while female wounded on the sidewalk. Both were pronounced dead on the scene about 9:30 p.m.

Police said the male victim is 19. The female victim is 18. Both were standing on the sidewalk when someone approached them and opened. They were shot multiple times

At 9 p.m., officers found two people dead after a shooting in the 1200 block of 12th Avenue North, according to WIAT.

A second shooting took place about 9 p.m. in the 5000 block of Sugar Ray Drive in Roosevelt City. In that case, a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy was patrolling Bessemer Super Highway near Sugar Ray Drive when he heard yelling coming from the home at 5001 Sugar Ray Drive.

He went to investigate and found an 8-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

The teen said the 8-year-old was playing with a pistol. The teen went to get the gun away from him and it discharged, hitting the teen in the arm and the 8-year-old in the neck. The deputy applied pressure to the child’s neck wound until Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived. Other deputies and police responded to the scene.

Both young victims were taken to the hospital.and are in stable condition.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Two young people have been transported to the hospital with injuries after a shooting, according to Birmingham Police. 

Police responded to a scene on the 5000 block of Sugar Ray Drive sometime after 8 p.m.

A 16-year-old and an eight-year-old have been transported, and at the time, both are said to be in stable condition, according to officers at the scene. 

According to police at the scene, the 8-year-old was reportedly handling the gun, and the older brother tried to grab it.
