Teen shot in Dolomite; suspect surrenders after 5 hour standoff

Earlier story: An 18-year-old was critically injured after being shot in the shoulder and stomach today in Birminghams Dolomite community.

The 39-year-old suspect is barricaded inside the house where the shooting happened as Birmingham police have set up a perimeter. A Birmingham SWAT team is setting up on the scene and sharpshooters are in position.

The shooting happened in the 1500 block of Harrison Drive and the victim was found nearby on Woodward Street.

The victims great-grandmother, Betty Edgemon, said the suspect is a Pleasant Grove man she sometimes lets stay at her house because, she said, he is lonely and she feels sorry for him.

Edgemon said the suspect, known to neighbors as Butter, was pacing the streets earlier today and “acting wild.” The next thing she knew, she said, her great grandson came into the home and said hed been shot.

The ordeal began shortly after 1 p.m. As of 4 p.m., SWAT negotiators are still trying to communicate with the man.
