22-year-old dies after weekend gunshot wound to the head in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department has reported that detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred in the 900 block of 50th Street North.

At approximately 3:50 a.m on Sunday, East Precinct officers responded to a call of a person shot at the incident location. After responding, officers located the victim inside a car suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment and placed in critical status.

On Wednesday, the victim was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries which caused the case to be reclassified as a homicide.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 22-year-old Devin Darnell Crowell. He was 22.

Al.com reported Crowell was shot early Sunday in Birmingham. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Crowell was kept at the hospital until Tuesday because he was an organ donor.

Crowell’s death is the 86th homicide in Alabama’s largest city. Police say the city is on pace to have one of its highest homicide counts since the 1990s.
