Pair nabbed on Interstate 20 in Birmingham with more than pound of meth, cocaine, lawmen say

Two Florence women were taken into custody in Jefferson County after lawmen say their had more than a pound illegal drugs in their vehicle.

The Jefferson County Sheriffs Office identified the suspects as Melynde Ane Fagnes, 24, and Adaisha Yelese Smith, 29.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian said a member of the Sheriffs Highway Safety Detail stopped Chrysler 300 early Wednesday on Interstate 20 near Montevallo Road. The stop – for a traffic violation – happened just after midnight.

A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up 1 pound, 2 ounces of methamphetamine and 3 ounces of cocaine. The drugs, Christian said, were found in the trunk of the car.

Fagnes and Smith were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine and trafficking cocaine. They were booked into the Jefferson County Jail on $30,000 bond each.

An early morning traffic stop Wednesday netted over a pound of methamphetamine, three ounces of cocaine and two arrests.

Deputies pulled over a Chrysler for a traffic violation on I-20W at MM 132 near Montevallo Road. A further search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the drugs, according to the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office.

The suspects inside the vehicle, 24-year-old Melynde Ane Fagnes and 29-year-old Adaisha Yelese Smith, are facing charges of trafficking cocaine and trafficking methamphetamine.
