Birmingham police officer struck, injured on interstate
A Birmingham police officer is seriously wounded after being struck by a passing vehicle on Interstate 59 Friday morning.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services responded at 5:52 a.m. to an area of I-59 just before the Roebuck exit on the southbound side of the roadway, said Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo. A Birmingham police officer was working the scene of an accident and was outside of his patrol car, when a passing vehicle struck him.
Police say the officer stopped to check on another vehicle and was outside their patrol unit when they were struck by a Mustang. The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
