About 2:13 a.m., west precinct officers responded to a report of a fight in the 1500 block of Bessemer Road. While in route, officers learned a person had been shot, police said.
Bham police officer shot several times in line of duty returns home
Upon arrival, officers found unresponsive person lying on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where the victim later died from their injuries, police said.
A security guard also sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm during the incident, police said.
The incident is a result of a domestic dispute between the deceased and his girlfriend, police said in a statement. Police said the girlfriend was taken into custody. No charges have been filed.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Members of the city wide task force escorted Officer Cullen Stafford home on Saturday.
Stafford was shot while responding to an armed robbery on July 17. Cullen was shot seven to eight times, according to police. He was shot once in the face, as well as in the chest and legs. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he underwent surgery.
The BPD family continues to support officer Stafford during the recovery process, Birmingham Police Department posted on Facebook.
