The shooting happened before 9:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of 12th Street North. Police said the shots were fired inside a second-floor unit in a small apartment building.
Both victims were brought outside for treatment before being taken to the hospital. At least one of the victims could have life-threatening injuries. One of the men who was shot lives in the building. Neighbors said he keeps to himself and goes straight to work and then home every day.
Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams said it appears the two men shot each other. The suspect, he said, shot the other man in the leg. They began to struggle over the gun and it discharged again, striking the suspect in the eye. His condition is said to be life-threatening.
One of the men was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center and the other man was taken to UAB Hospitals Trauma Center.
Residents said they heard arguing at the apartment building Monday night and again earlier Tuesday. They reported hearing four to five shots fired in the most recent incident. Williams said a woman was at the apartment at the time of the shooting, but he said he did not yet the motive of the dispute.

Birmingham police say two people were transported to the hospital after a double shooting in the 1200 block of 12th Street North. One person has life-threatening injuries after being shot in the head and the second person was shot in the leg.
Police say a victim was shot in the leg before the two people got into a tussle. During the tussle, the gun went off and struck the suspect in the head.
