Officers were called about midnight to the 2100 block of Highland Avenue on a report of a vehicle break-in, said Sgt. Johnny Williams. Once on the scene, police received information that someone was breaking into a vehicle at the rear of the location.

Sgt. Johnny Williams says officers responded to the 2100 block of Highland Avenue to investigate a report of a vehicle break-in at approximately midnight. A person matching the description of the suspect was located in a vehicle in the rear parking lot of the address.

The officers found a person matching the descriptions inside a vehicle in the parking lot, Williams said. The officer and the suspect got into an altercation before the officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A suspect remains in the hospital receiving treatment after an overnight officer-involved shooting on the southside of Birmingham.

Officers provided aid to the suspect until Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service got on the scene and transported him to UAB Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The suspect was transported to UAB Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The SBI is investigating the shooting.

As is protocol, the State Bureau of Investigation will take over the officer-involved shooting portion of the investigation.

The officer and suspect became involved in an altercation before the officer shot the suspect, Williams said.
