‘The Purge 4’ just started filming in Buffalo: Who’s starring, what’s it about?

The fourth film in the horror franchise began filming in Buffalo on Monday and will shoot entirely in the area, spending more than $20 million and adding 1,000 jobs.Island is the most crowd-pleasing of the films,” writer and director of the three previous Purge films, James DeMonaco, recently told Vulture, who returns to write and produce the fourth. “It’s so kick ass in its third act. What’s fun, too, is there’s an anti-hero. More than the previous films, there’s a singular hero in this movie. This is one man’s journey, William, an anti-hero inspired by Eastwood in Unforgiven, so it’s this very cool, modern, kind of badass who redeems himself through the story.

The Purge: Island has a working title of “Island Experiment” and looks to be one of Buffalo’s biggest productions yet as it’s reported to involve hundreds of extras and local jobs.

“New York has solidified its standing as a world-class entertainment center boasting unrivaled talent, resources, locations and opportunities,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. “This production will result in tremendous economic activity that will create a ripple effect across Western New York.”

interview with Vulture, DeMonaco promised the film would be the  most “crowd-pleasing” of the series. “What’s fun, too, is there’s an anti-hero. More than the previous films, there’s a singular hero in this movie. This is one man’s journey,” said DeMonaco, adding the character was inspired by Clint Eastwood in “Unforgiven.”

The movie joins a steady stream of films being made here, including “The Adventures of Wolfboy,” which is filming now, and “Marshall,” which opens nationwide Oct. 13 with a local premiere Oct. 7 at the North Park Theatre.Buffalo is standing in for Staten Island in “Purge: The Island,” which is a prequel leading up to the first experimental Purge night in which all crime is legal for 12 hours.
