Report: Bills free agent CB EJ Gaines is firmly on Texans radar
The Texans waited too long to get serious about keeping cornerback A.J. Bouye last year and watched him leave for the rival Jaguars. Now, cornerback Johnathan Joseph is a free agent.
The Texans are interested in Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler and Bills cornerback E.J. Gaines, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. New Texans General Manager Brian Gaine came from Buffalo.

Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins recently made his pitch to Butler on social media.
Gaines joined the Bills in 2017 as part of a preseason trade that sent Sammy Watkins to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Gaines and a second-round pick. Gaines proceeded to start 11 games while battling various injuries. When healthy, Gaines was one of the top members of the Bills secondary. He defended nine passes, forced three fumbles and had one interception.
Bills free agent cornerback E.J. Gaines is “firmly on the Texans radar,” according to a report in the Houston Chronicle, citing league sources. The report notes that there is expected to be a strong market for Gaines, with multiple teams interested.
The Bills appear ready to move on from Gaines, who could command up to $9 million per year on the open market. Buffalo signed veteran cornerback Vontae Davis to a contract before free agency opened to plan for the eventual departure of Gaines.
The legal tampering period began Monday when agents were allowed to communicate with team representatives. No deals can officially take place until the league year begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
With the NFLs legal tampering window opening Monday at noon, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the Houston Texans are interested in Bills free-agent cornerback E.J. Gaines.
The market for Gaines could be roughly $9 million per season, according to some estimates. The Bills have already signed free-agent cornerback Vontae Davis, who was released by the Colts and was eligible to sign elsewhere before the league year began.
Gaines, 26, was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams last summer in the Sammy Watkins trade. He played in 11 games with the Bills, allowing 38 receptions on 60 targets, according to Pro Football Focus.
