Jets-Bills Preview: 5 Questions with Buffalo Rumblings
Bowles rules out Darnold as Week 10 starter
New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold hasnt practiced the last two days with a right foot injury.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Thursday he is ready to rule out Darnold as the starter, but not the game.

Still, it would be a stretch at this point for Darnold to be ready for the weekends game. Reporters the past two days have spotted the signal-caller observing practices off to the side while wearing a protective walking boot.

Buffalos newest wideout was a big part of the game plan last week, netting 5 targets only 5 days after signing with the team. He only made 2 catches for 17 yards, and he dropped a pass that led to one of Nathan Petermans three interceptions. However, the fact that he was third among Bills receivers in targets, trailing only Kelvin Benjamin (9) and Zay Jones (6), and second among wideouts in snaps with 75, bodes well for his involvement in the offense. Factor in Kelvin Benjamins non-participation in Wednesdays practice due to a knee ailment and Pryors prior connection to this weeks opponent, and the possibility of a breakout game exists. To be fair, a breakout for a Buffalo receiver in 2018 may not be much more than a 10-point fantasy day, but as a flex player in a week where four teams are on a bye, that output would be completely acceptable.

Additionally, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport previously reported that Darnold will not play Sunday.

Backup quarterback Josh McCown is expected to step in as the starter in Darnolds place. Bowles told reporters that Darnold remains the starter when hes fully healthy.

The biggest news was at linebacker, where rookie Tremaine Edmunds took another step forward in his return from a concussion, wearing the blue jersey that signified hes allowed to have contact in practice. That shows that Edmunds is in the final step of the leagues concussion protocol. If he passes his test following todays practice, he will be a full participant Friday and be clear of the concussion protocol.

Sam Darnold: Ill treat sitting out as a learning experience

Sam Darnold is injured and has been ruled out as the starter against the Bills, coach Todd Bowles said today. Bowles added, however, that it’s still possible Darnold could be active as McCown’s backup.

Darnold is sporting a walking boot on his right foot for an injury suffered in last weeks loss. As a result, Darnold did not practice Wednesday and it wasnt long before Darnold was ruled out for Sundays game against the Bills. Diagnosed with a “significant foot sprain,” the Jets are hopeful Darnold will be available to return against New England in Week 12 following the teams Week 11 bye. Though, Mehta urges that the team is not overly optimistic that Darnold would, in fact, be ready for the Patriots. Josh McCown is set to start in Darnolds absence.

Buffalo Bills injury report: Tremaine Edmunds closer to return following Thursday practice; Josh Allen, Derek…

Darnold has been struggling of late, and he suffered a foot injury on Sunday that has him limited this week. That leaves the Jets down to McCown, the only other quarterback on their 53-man roster.

The best was right tackle Jeremiah Sirles with a PFF grade of 64.2. Sirles took part in 30 percent of offensive snaps, subbing in for Jordan Mills. Overall, Sirles graded as Buffalo’s best offensive lineman with a score of 68.6. Teller was second behind Sirles in overall play too, notching a 68.0.

Given how poorly Darnold has played in recent weeks, McCown may actually be an upgrade for the Jets’ chances on Sunday against a bad Bills team. McCown isn’t a great quarterback, but he’s probably competent enough to limit turnovers while the Jets’ defense should feast on the terrible Buffalo offense.

Like Johnson, inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis (foot) and outside linebacker Frankie Luvu (neck) were limited Wednesday and fully participated Thursday. Both should be good to go for Sunday. Pierre-Louis has missed the past four games. His return should help on special teams.

It seems likely the Jets would call up Davis Webb off their practice squad if they decide to add another quarterback to their 53-man roster.

Trumaine Johnson practiced in full Thursday for the first time in weeks because of a quad injury. He was upgraded to full after being limited on Wednesday. As for Darnold, he did not practice for a second straight day and Todd Bowles already ruled him out as the starter for Sunday’s game. So, Josh McCown will get the nod at quarterback.
