Jets confirm Josh McCown will start on Sunday
New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold hasnt practiced the last two days with a right foot injury.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Thursday he is ready to rule out Darnold as the starter, but not the game.

It was a rough week in Washington. (Getty)MoreNFL kickersNext, NFL kickers, who this week proved once again that their capacity for infuriating their teams and fans — in this case, Denver and the Chargers — knows no bounds. And, just as an aside, naming FOOTball after a small part of the game where so much can go wrong so badly is ridiculous, like naming baseball Pickoff-ball or basketball Inbounds-pass ball. Its wrong, right from the jump. (Thank you for indulging in this moment of cheesy 80s-style, brick-wall-and-rolled-up-suit-jacket comedy. Tip your waitresses.)

Still, it would be a stretch at this point for Darnold to be ready for the weekends game. Reporters the past two days have spotted the signal-caller observing practices off to the side while wearing a protective walking boot.

On to our list! First up, the Buffalo Bills, who have not won a game since Week 5 and have not scored 14 points in a game since Week 3. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Bills continue to start Nathan Peterman at quarterback. Look, we generally dont like to pile on guys who are obviously way in over their heads, but seriously … right at this moment, you very well could be a better QB than Nathan Peterman. Seriously. Check your phone. The Bills might be interested in talking to you. You might be headed to New York this week.

Additionally, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport previously reported that Darnold will not play Sunday.

Teller, a guard whom the Bills selected in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, got his first taste of NFL action in Week 9. The former Virginia Tech Hokie was flanked by Dawkins, Buffalos starting left tackle, on every single one of his 17 snaps last week. Teller views Dawkins, a second-year man who started 11 games as a rookie, as an inspiration both on the field and in the locker room, an incredible player who has helped him adjust to NFL life.

Backup quarterback Josh McCown is expected to step in as the starter in Darnolds place. Bowles told reporters that Darnold remains the starter when hes fully healthy.

Its a heavily-scrutinized position in which players typically dont receive praise unless they break off a highlight-reel worthy run. Expecting returners to take it to the house every time they touch the ball, however, is simply unrealistic. Instead, teams look for consistency in their returners, players who are frequently able to pick up solid yardage on their returns and flip not only the field, but momentum, as well.

Sam Darnold is injured and has been ruled out as the starter against the Bills, coach Todd Bowles said today. Bowles added, however, that it’s still possible Darnold could be active as McCown’s backup.

The quarterback position is not the only one in flux. On Tuesday, the Bills cut starting cornerback Phillip Gaines. In practice on Wednesday it appeared that Ryan Lewis would be taking over starting duties from Gaines, as he did earlier in the season when Gaines and Vontae Davis were injured. There are also changes being made to the offensive line. After seeing his first reps of the season against the Bears, rookie guard Wyatt Teller has been practicing with the starters this week. Any improvements along the line would be a much-welcomed sight.

Darnold has been struggling of late, and he suffered a foot injury on Sunday that has him limited this week. That leaves the Jets down to McCown, the only other quarterback on their 53-man roster.

Most Bills fans have seen all they need to see of Nathan Peterman, but they might have to endure more of him on Sunday. His true competitors at quarterback, Josh Allen and Derek Anderson, are both injured. Allen is back practicing, albeit in a limited fashion. Anderson is not practicing at all and remains in the concussion protocol. Sean McDermott made it clear on Tuesday that pecking order goes Allen, Anderson, Peterman. If neither of the first two are healthy, well be forced to watch Peterman against the NFLs seventh-best defense.

Buffalo Bills injury report: Tremaine Edmunds closer to return following Thursday practice; Josh Allen, Derek…

Given how poorly Darnold has played in recent weeks, McCown may actually be an upgrade for the Jets’ chances on Sunday against a bad Bills team. McCown isn’t a great quarterback, but he’s probably competent enough to limit turnovers while the Jets’ defense should feast on the terrible Buffalo offense.

It seems likely the Jets would call up Davis Webb off their practice squad if they decide to add another quarterback to their 53-man roster.

In other injury-related news, rookie QB Josh Allen was limited at practice for the second straight day as he recovers from an elbow sprain, while fellow QB Derek Anderson (concussion) was once again sidelined as he works his way back from the leagues concussion protocol. At this point, its unlikely he will be able to play on Sunday due to the multi-step nature of the protocol.
