Its an unlikely match-up for FOX to put in its prime time national slot. The two teams have played just three times dating back to 1900, when the Nittany Lions lost 10-0. But Penn State holds a 2-1 edge against the Bulls, including a 27-14 win in the second week of the 2015 season, when then-freshman running back Saquon Barkley scored his first touchdown and ran for 115 yards.

The Massachusetts native burst onto the scene last year as a true freshman. After starting the season as a reserve, he quickly assumed the starting role vacated by Mike Gesicki. He caught 26 passes for 368 yards, and led the Nittany Lions with eight touchdown catches.

Penn State vs. Buffalo: It wont be as easy as 79-7, but Penn State should go 2-0

Freiermuth caught one pass for 25 yards last week. However, late in the first half he was knocked for the game on a helmet-to-helmet shot near the goal line. The play went unpunished for targeting, and wasnt even reviewed, but Freiermuth did not return to the game.

Penn State certainly was not worried about a matchup with an FCS opponent in the first week. Idaho found out the hard way last Saturday.

The conclusion from last weeks game was to not get too excited about a 79-7 victory over an FCS opponent that was picked to finish in the middle of the pack in its conference. The expectation Saturday night, after a week in which 72 players saw action against Idaho, is that the starters, including quarterback Sean Clifford, will get a longer run. It will be interesting to see if the Nittany Lions can achieve the same kind of balance – 331 yards rushing, 342 yards passing – that it exhibited last week.

But what about a test from the MAC? And do the Buffalo Bulls qualify as a test? Well know more later today. Here is what you need to know about the Nittany Lions Week 2 matchup with Buffalo …

Buffalo didnt show much last week against an FCS opponent in Robert Morris. The Bulls running game will be challenged by Penn States deep and talented defensive line led by end Yetur Gross-Matos, and redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Myers will have his share of problems communicating with his offense in front of more than 100,000 fans.

The Big Question, Vol. I: How will the Bulls defense deal with Penn States speed and skill at wideout and running back?

The Big Questions, Vol. II: Will talented Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth play today after leaving the Idaho game late in the second quarter following a nasty hit?

Saturday’s game will be the first time the Bulls appear on-air nationally since the 1970s. While Buffalo offers a much tougher matchup for the Lions in comparison to last week’s opponents, it’s still considered to be viewed as a potential trap game for Penn State.

He said it: I think as he continues to gain confidence and get comfortable with his responsibilities and also what the offense is trying to do in terms of trying to put him in binds, in terms of his reads and trying to get his eyes dirty in terms of what hes looking at, I think as those things continue to clear up for him and he gets more comfortable and more confident, I think hes got a very bright future. Theres not too many 6-4, 240-pound linebackers that can run and hit with the instincts that he has. — Penn States James Franklin on true freshman linebacker Brandon Smith.

Myers showed he is mobile, he’s a quick decision-maker and that he can throw the ball … but with that being said, he passed for 69 yards and two touchdowns, and only attempted 10 passes in three quarters in a 38-10 win against Robert Morris. There could be several reasons for that, including: there weren’t enough seasoned options at wide receiver (a spot that’s been affected by injuries and inexperience during preseason) or UB wasn’t going to open its entire playbook in its season opener against an FCS program.
