Chula Vista Spartans 31, Coronado Islanders 7

The Chula Vista Spartans, winless since Week 2, dominated the Coronado Islanders 31-7 to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Division IV playoffs.

Lead by sophomore Karlos Jimenez and his two rushing touchdowns, the Spartans, who entered the playoffs at 2-8, did not play like a nine seed on an eight game losing streak.

Coronado (7-4), came into the playoffs hoping to continue their success from the regular season. They simply did not have any answers to put points on the board.

Missed opportunities would doom the Islanders. Unsuccessful fourth down conversions, failing to convert a fake field goal, giving up a long pass play on third and long when the Spartans were pinned near their own end zone. Coronado just could not catch a break.

After the Spartans stopped the Islanders on third down in the red zone, Coronado lined up for a field goal trailing 17-7. Instead of trying to cut the lead to one score, Coronado ran a fake field goal and were stopped three yards shy. Chula Vista proceeded to march down the field and score on a Jimenez run to go up 24-7, putting the game out of reach.

Chula Vista will travel to San Diego next Friday night to take on the Cavers, the one seed in Division IV. Kick-off is at 7.

PREVIEW – The CIF playoffs are upon us. After 11 weeks, the field in Division IV has been trimmed down to the final 12.

Based off records, this looks like the a mismatch in favor of the Islanders. Coronado enters the playoffs with a 7-3 record. The Spartans are 2-8. Looking closer at each team’s schedule neither team goes in with much momentum.

Coronado is coming off a 54-0 defeat to Serra. Chula Vista, after starting 2-0, have lost 8 in a row. They each have Mar Vista as a common opponent. Against the Mariners, Coronado was on the road and lost 34-7. Chula Vista was home against Mar Vista and lost a close game 17-14.

Coronado, lead by Coach Kurt Hines, are averaging just over 24 points per game. The Spartans are giving up just over 30 points per game.

The key to this game will be the Islanders offense against the Spartans defense. How will head coach Howard Bannister prepare his Spartans defense to slow down the Coronado offense?

On Friday night, Coronado hosted Serra High School for the final regular-season home game. As such, it was also “Senior Night,” where the class of 2019 seniors were honored for their dedication to Islander sports. The community came to cheer on the Islanders, but unfortunately it was a rough 54-0 loss to Serra.

Although Coronado was not able to score, junior Colter Maldonado showed strong and versatile play on both offense and defense. “We ended our regular season at 7-3,” shares Coach Hines, “a complete turnaround from last years record of 2-8.”

Congratulations to the seniors for an outstanding season! The Islanders will continue post-season playoffs this Friday night against Chula Vista High School.
