I cant decide which is better: the dunk, or the reactions of Darius Garland and Saben Lee trailing behind him.

The other highlight of tonights game: Darius Garland had 33 points, and Vanderbilt improved to 4-0 on the season.

Down 18-12 early in the first, Liberty put together an 8-0 run and had a 20-18 lea thanks to an Elijah Coffee 3 from the left wing forcing a Vanderbilt timeout. Then with the score 23-20 in favor of VU, Darius McGhee, a 5-foot-9 freshman, stole the ball at half court and zoomed the other way where he finished with a two-handed slam.

NASHVILLE — Darius Garland scored a career-high 33 points and his backcourt partner Saben Lee added 17 and Vanderbilt won a battle of unbeaten teams with a 77-70 victory over Liberty on Monday night.

Liberty quickly sliced the lead to 41-40 to start the second half as Vandy came out of the locker room sloppy and cold – the Dores started 1 of 5 from the floor. But then Matthew Moyer came off the bench minutes later to provide a spark with five straight points and give VU a 51-45 lead.

Garland rebounded from an off-night after being held to a career-low three points in Friday’s win over Alcorn State. He hit 12 of 18 from the floor, including five 3-pointers.

The highly-touted freshman point guard was a McDonald’s All-American and five-star prospect at nearby Brentwood Academy last season.

Vanderbilt will try to match the start of the ’15-16 team at 4 p.m. Friday when its hosts Kent State. The Golden Flashes (3-1) host Savannah State on Tuesday – they lost earlier this season to the same Liberty team Vandy beat Monday.

Vanderbilt’s Matt Ryan, a Notre Dame transfer, scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was ejected after a flagrant foul with 5:21 left.

Darius Garland led the way for Vanderbilt on Monday with 33 points on 12 of 18 shooting. That performance came after scoring just three points Friday against Alcorn State. The freshman also had four rebounds and four assists.

Vanderbilt (4-0) led most of the way, but Liberty stayed within striking distance until the Commodores finished strong.

The 2015-16 Vanderbilt team started that season 5-0 before losing to Kansas in the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The Commodores finished 19-14 and lost to Wichita State in the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio.

Lovell Cabbil led Liberty (3-1) with 16 points, Darius McGhee had 15 and Scottie James added 12 in front of a crowd of 8,493 at Memorial Gym. James is 15-of-17 shooting from the floor in the last three games.

The Commodores are now 4-0 after Monday’s victory and with earlier wins over Winthrop, Southern California and Alcorn State. Their toughest stretch of nonconference games will begin in December.

Vanderbilt capped an 11-0 run late in the first half with an alley-oop pass from Garland to Lee, who finished with a dunk for a 34-27 lead. Garland waved his arms above his head in encouragement to the Commodores’ student section after the play.

The 2007-08 squad was 16-0 that year before falling 79-73 at Kentucky in double overtime. Those Commodores went 26-8 and lost to Siena in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Liberty’s Caleb Homesley, who scored a season-high 16 points in Friday’s win over Kent State, was held to two points on a 1-for-6 shooting night.

The Flames fell to 0-9 against Southeastern Conference teams. Vanderbilt improved to 17-0 against the Big South, including a win over Winthrop in the season opener.

Liberty: The Flames finally cooled off after winning their first three games as the Commodores pulled away late.

Liberty (3-1) led 27-26 with 7:12 remaining in the opening period, but the visitors wouldnt be able to climb back in front again.

Vanderbilt: Garland followed a career low with a career high after Alcorn State focused its defence on containing him in Friday’s win over the Braves.
