Darius Garland Leaves Combine, Leading To Belief He Received Lottery Promise

The belief that Garland left the combine due to a promise in the lottery is not shocking when you consider that several of the point guard-needy teams are selecting in the top 10. The Memphis Grizzlies are selecting No. 2 overall and are expected to nab explosive, top-PG prospect Ja Morant, widely regarded as the second-best overall player in the class.

In terms of PG-needy teams, that leaves only the Phoenix Suns–who pick directly in front of the Bulls at No. 6–in between the Bulls and Garland.

ESPNs NBA mock draft has the Lakers taking Garland with the No.4 overall pick, perhaps looking for a guard with some shooting range to pair with Lonzo Ball, or a young PG to help them move on from Ball altogether.

Starting with the NBA Draft Combine this week, there’s still much time before the June 20 draft for evaluators to reshape opinions of this draft class. That said, John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station has three realistic prospects for the Suns to watch at No. 6.

Making the Garland-to-the-Lakers angle more interesting is the fact that the youngster, like LeBron James,  is represented by Rich Paul of of Klutch Sports

That means the Phoenix Suns, who learned Tuesday in the lottery that they will select sixth, will add either a project or a role player if they remain in their first-round draft slot.

The 2019 NBA Draft is on June 20, and between now and then, the trade chatter, draft night promises and combine performances will go a long way towards shaping what will surely be a wild draft.

In other words, they are not awarded consecutively, similar to how if you buy 50/50 raffle tickets from a vendor selling physical ticket stubs (you know the ones, generally purchased at a local carnival or fair, usually reddish in color, they give you the requite number of consecutive tickets, tearing off one half of the stub while leaving you with the matching half), instead the numbers, while clumped together to a degree, are mixed up among the teams, much like the digitally assigned 50/50 numbers you might received on a printed receipt when purchased at a local sports stadium.

The NBA Draft Combine happens this week, but one prospect is leaving prematurely. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Vanderbilt freshman standout Darius Garland has left the NBA Draft Combine and theres a belief that Garland could “have a promise” from one or more teams in the lottery.

Instead, not only did a combination they owned fail to populate with the first overall pick, but neither the second, third, or fourth, and with three teams jumping ahead of them in the lottery, they slid down from their pleasant perch at 3rd overall, and will now draft at their new unlucky number, 6 (although, somewhere Ring of Honor member Walter Davis might take offense to that sentiment).

Garland appeared in just five games during his freshman season at Vanderbilt after he suffered a meniscus injury in his left knee back in November. Just playing so few games at the collegiate level, the Tennessee native still decided to declare for the 2019 draft.

It may seem far-fetched, but in todays NBA nothing is impossible. As the most coveted prospect to hit the league since disgruntled New Orleans star Anthony Davis, Williamson has unprecedented player power. Would he use it?

In those five contests, Garland put together averages of 16.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 47.8 percent from beyond the arc. His best performance came on Nov. 19 when he scored 33 points in a 79-70 Vanderbilt win over Liberty.

CBS Sports Garry Parrish currently has Garland going to the Phoenix Suns with the sixth overall pick in his post-lottery mock draft. The general consensus is that Garland will be selected in the top 10 and could even sneak into the top five of the June draft.

Now that we know the order of the NBA draft, we go over which teams might be the best fit for the non-Zion top talent: R.J. Barrett, Ja Morant, Darius Garland, Cam Reddish, and more

As far as where Garland could end up, several teams in the top 10 could show significant interest in a player of Garlands caliber.

The Los Angeles Lakers could be very interested in drafting Garland as their roster is currently constructed. Obviously, their interest could change if an Anthony Davis trade occurs prior to the draft, but Garland would make a ton of sense for the team. Rajon Rondo is set to become a free agent and if the Lakers were select Garland, Lonzo Ball wouldnt have to handle the basketball as much and could be more of an offensive weapon.

The Chicago Bulls and Suns also could have interest in grabbing Garland if he falls out of the top five. Outside of Chicagos starting backcourt of Kris Dunn and Zach LaVine, the Bulls dont exactly have a ton of depth and Garland would fit the bill considering hes a combo guard. The Suns could also be interested with their need for a point guard, which Garland could blossom into down the road.

Its certainly going to be worth keeping an eye on what teams bring Garland in for pre-draft workouts, which potentially could give a clearer indication of what teams are interested in selecting him.
