UFC adds Michelle Waterson-Cortney Casey fight to Glendale event

The UFC has added a women’s straw weight fight to the UFC on Fox 29 card in April at Gila River Arena in Glendale, azcentral sports has learned.

The seventh-ranked Michelle Waterson (14-6-0) will face No. 12 Cortney Casey (7-5-0) in a bounce-back scrap for each fighter.

Casey has been pretty on and off in her UFC career to this point. She debuted on short notice against Joanne Calderwood in Calderwood’s home country of Scotland then went and played visitor again when she fought Seo Hee Ham in South Korea afterward. Since starting off 0-2, she has earned notable victories over Randa Markos and former World Series of Fighting champion, Jessica Aguilar. Despite those wins, Casey’s UFC record still sits at 3-4 which is similar to Waterson’s 2-3.

Waterson, known to fans as “The Karate Hottie,” is coming off two-straight defeats and “Cast Iron” Casey has lost two of her last three.

For its upcoming event in Glendale, Ariz., the UFC has continued to add some exciting matchups to the card set for April. Per the Arizona based news outlet, AZ Central, a women’s strawweight bout between Michelle Waterson (14-6) and Cortney Casey (7-5) is one of the most recent additions to the card.

This fight will be big for both fighters but more so for Waterson who is riding a two-fight losing streak and will want to avoid making that three. This is the first time in the former Invicta champion’s career that she has lost back to back fights.

Waterson, better known to mixed martial arts fans as the “Karate Hottie”, has cooled down slightly since coming up short in her last two outings against current strawweight champion Rose Namajunas and No. 5 ranked contender Tecia Torres. Prior to these defeats, Waterson won her first two fights in the UFC by way of rear-naked choke over Angela Magana and Paige VanZant.

Hoping to rebound from a turbulent 2017, the former Invicta FC atomweight champion needs a win here. If Waterson is unsuccessful against Casey, she will have dropped her last three fights and that could spell some trouble for the “Karate Hottie”.

Casey is also attempting to bounce back from a loss. After defeating Jessica Aguilar at UFC 211, “Cast Iron” went on to face a difficult test in Felice Herrig, but ultimately lost via split decision. Now, Casey has a chance to get back on track with a win over Waterson in this homecoming fight.

After the fight was announced, Casey took to Instagram to express her excitement in being able to fight in her backyard.

Ok Arizona it's going down April 14th at Gila River Arena!! Super excited to be fighting at home!! #AZ #UFC #WMMA #CastIron

‘The Karate Hottie’ was last in action at UFC 218, where she lost a unanimous decision to Tecia Torres. Prior to that December 2017 loss, Waterson (14–6) had been submitted by Rose Namajunas at UFC on FOX 24.
