Freezing precipitation, ice possible as 2017 comes to an end

Cold start to New Year’s Eve for North Texas

Beginning after midnight across northern areas, the threat for light freezing precipitation will advance southeastward and reach a Comanche to DFW to Sulphur Springs line by sunrise Sunday, and to a Killeen to Waco to Athens line Sunday afternoon.

Five stories that have North Texas talking: November has been so hot; the Bushes didn’t vote for Trump; the latest on the church shooting; and more.

The National Weather Service expanded the Winter Weather Advisory until noon Sunday across much of North Texas, including Dallas and Tarrant counties. The biggest concern is freezing drizzle that could create slick roads. TxDOT said it pre-treated 10,000 miles of roadway with a brine solution to keep ice from sticking. Those areas could experience icy travel conditions on New Year’s Eve, particularly on bridges and overpasses.By removing this location, you will no longer receive the following alerts:

In that arctic air, moisture is still being squeezed out of the atmosphere as drizzle or light snow. This will continue in North Texas into the early afternoon hours. Slick roadways, bridges, and overpasses have already occurred, and any additional freezing drizzle will cause them to stay slick this afternoon into this evening.

In Grand Prairie, icy conditions shut down the EB I-30 ramp to NB Bush Turnpike.

Freezing conditions can create extremely dangerous driving conditions. If drivers must get out: reduce speed, use caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses, leave enough room between you and others and avoid travel if possible.

Special Report The end of 2017 will come to a very cold end as freezing precipitation and the chance for minor ice accumulations move into the area Saturday night and Sunday.

The ice is causing slick travel conditions, resulting in vehicle accidents.“Temperatures will remain above freezing southeast of a Lampasas to Waco to Canton line through early afternoon which means just drizzle is expected there with no impacts,” the weather service says.
