Gov. Abbott unfit to serve as North Texas MLK parade marshal, Arlington NAACP and civic leaders say Initially, I — and our editorial board — saw all the protests over Abbott’s ceremonial role as a missed opportunity. I figured that if Abbott would dare show up, civil rights leaders could press him on his policies that work against minorities, including voter ID and sanctuary city laws.

Yet, come to find out, that was only the most visible problem. If we look closely, Barbee’s big parade was struggling all along. That it finally fell apart is no surprise.

That was followed by a clarification from Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson, who said she would not be on a float with Abbott as advertised.

Once word got out that Abbott was tapped to be the honorary grand marshal, the parade collapsed under threats of protest and boycott.
