Champions League group stage matchday one – as it happened
Alex Mott d M Y18th September 2018 20:24 The Champions League is back in business! Keep up with all the latest from around Europe right here.

23:00 – Thank you to everyone who joined us this evening. We’ll be back tomorrow. Cheers

22:57 – Holy F. What a first night of Champions League action. Late drama in Milan and Liverpool with Lionel Messi laying a marker down for everyone else. Here’s the full-time results.

Liverpool probably shouldve regained their two-goal lead from one of the many chances they created in the second half, and it even looked like theyd done just that when Mohamed Salah charged into a goalmouth scrum and flicked the ball into the net. However, that would-be goal was soon disallowed once it became clear the ref had called a foul when Sturridge inadvertently kicked PSG keeper Alphonse Aréola in the dick and balls seconds before Salahs shot:

Salah would later prove the culprit in PSGs equalizer, when a lazy pass of his badly missed its target and sparked a counterattack from which Kylian Mbappé scored. It looked like Liverpool had robbed themselves of the three points their performance deserved and stolen from us the schadenfreude we PSG-haters subsist on, until substitute Roberto Firmino saved the day:

Liverpool vs. PSG score, recap: Firmino scores last-gasp Champions League winner to Mbappe in five-goal thriller

22:51 – WE PROMISED DRAMA AND HERE IT IS! In the 91st minute a jinking run from Roberto Firmino sees him in a few yards of space and the Brazilian fires in from 18 yards. 3-2!

22:50 – It’s late, but it’s not really that dramatic. Galatasaray have a penalty and Selçuk İnan tucks it home to make it 3-0.

A great goal to cap a great match with the greatest thing of all, which is yet another opportunity to revel in PSGs woes.

On his 20th birthday, American Christian Pulisic scores the potential game-winner with this crazy goal!!

22:43 – GOOOOAAALLLL PSG! Salah gives the ball away inside his own half. Neymar gets it, tries to beat two defenders, sees the ball ricochet off his shin, and Mbappé is there to fire in from close range. 2-2!

While it appears that Salah was angry, there are images of the forward raising his arms to celebrate Firminos goal before throwing the bottle – leading some to believe he was expressing his relief at the injury time matchwinner.

22:41 – GOOOOAAAAALLLL DORTMUND. We’ve no idea how but Christian Pulisic has broken the deadlock for Dortmund against Bruges. Just hold tight and we’ll get the goal for you.

22:39 – And just to top it off Choupo-Moting, last seen stinking the place out for Stoke, comes on in place of Angel Di Maria. Amazing.

Salah was hooked late on against PSG after his mistake led to their equalizer, and watched from the bench as Firmino’s goal led to a victory for Liverpool.

22:37 – Napoli meanwhile are all over Red Star but have so far failed to find the back of the net. Callejon in particular has already created seven chances – the most for a Partenopei player in the competition’s history.

Every Champions League goal: Messi eclipses Ronaldo, wonderstrike stuns Spurs

#PSG are being totally outplayed here. They are a team in transition, they will get better, but there's a hell of a lot of work to do. Their ball retention has been abysmal.

22:33 – GOOOAAALLLL PORTO! At the second time of asking the Portuguese side stroke home from the penalty stop. Schalke 1-1 Porto.

Liverpool have referred forward Mohamed Salah to the Merseyside Police over a video which appears to show the Egyptian …

22:30 – Remember we said Liverpool had a goal disallowed? Here’s why. Can’t even go studs in on someone’s balls anymore. Game’s gone.

Mane-ball! Sadio Manes brilliant dummy sends PSG star Neymar back to Brazil in Champions League

22:20 – We’re aware this is a Champions League live blog, but with Bielsa they’ll be there in three years anyway. Leeds have just gone 2-0 up against Preston.

Many fans are hyped at the prospect of Rabiot playing in Red next season. He is a different kind of player to the current midfield options. He is known for his silky passing, vision and close control. That would offer Klopp some qualities that were lost when Philippe Coutinho moved to Barcelona on a transfer earlier this year.

22:17 – GOOAA….No ! Salah taps in from three years but the goal is disallowed for Sturridge’s initial challenge on Areola.

Liverpool news: Julian Draxler dig at Reds after PSGs defeat at Anfield

22:15 – BIG NEWS FROM ANFIELD!  Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting is now warming up and looks almost ready to come on.

The French international has been heavily linked to a summer move to Merseyside after he indicated he would not be signing a new contract at PSG. His current deal runs out in June 2019 and Michael Edwards and his team could make a swoop for Rabiot on a free transfer.

Gini Wiljnaldum just thanked me for scoring the penalty. I said Don't thank me Gini, thank Juan Bernat. He was the one who knocked you over.

22:08 – The second 45 looks to be mirroring the first in Belgium, with Bruges well on top against Dortmund. Still though, no goals at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Almost every eye in Anfield will be keenly watching the performances of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side. However there will be a handful of scouts who will be taking extensive notes on one Paris Saint Germain player; Adrien Rabiot.

22:07 – We neglected Schalke vs Porto in the first half so we’ll start there. It’s the away team who are doing all the early running in the second half with the Portuguese side getting a free kick wide on the right in a dangerous position. It’s floated over but the hosts clear the danger. Nervy times.

Tonight will be a special moment for Rabiot who made it clear during Liverpool’s Champions League run last season his love for Anfield. He posted an Instagram story declaring his love for the European occasion at the ground.

21:32 – GOOALLLLL ATLÉTI. Diego Costa goes through one-on-one after a beautiful pass from Griezmann, and the Spain international slots home with ease.

Sturridge on standby as Klopp faces Liverpool striker shortage

21:29 – Van Dijk booked for dragging back Neymar. Could that come back to cost Liverpool late on I wonder?

21:27 – The camera’s just cut to a very dour looking Thomas Tuchel at Anfield. His side may have had 55% of the ball, but they’ve done nothing with it so far.

After being sent on loan to West Bromwich Albion last season, the injury-prone England forwards Liverpool career looked over.

21:25 – We didn’t see this one coming, but Bruges are definitely on top against Dortmund. As yet though, the deadlock’s yet to be broken.

Firmino celebrated by running towards the crowd with one hand covered over his wounded eye, much to Klopps amusement.

Liverpool FC news and transfers LIVE – Jurgen Klopp hails outstanding show, Reds backed for success and the reaction from PSG victory

21:21 – Another chance for Liverpool, but once again they can’t convert. A superb pass from Henderson was in the direction of Mané, but the Senegal international couldn’t quite get on to the end of the ball with Areola in no man’s land.

21:19 – Bruges go close! A cross from the right looked like it was going to be poked home by Jelle Vossen, but Marco Reus slid in to clear away.

The message Liverpool vs. PSG will send to European club football

21:18 – GOOOALLLL MONACO. Grandsir scores. A very scrappy one, but they all count. A cross from the left wasn’t cleared and the 21-year-old was there to stab home.

Roberto Firmino mocks Jan Vertonghen with goal celebration as he hits late screamer to beat PSG

21:17 – Sorry Red Star fans, we haven’t mentioned your side yet after two decades away, but to be honest, there’s not much to report. You’re putting all your men behind the ball and waiting for Napoli to make a mistake. So far, it’s still goalless.

21:15 – AND IT’S SAVED. Alex Telles hit it low to the goalkeeper’s left, but Färhmann was there to palm it round the post, Still Schalke 0-0 Porto.

It seems he would have been open to a move to Anfield, but Liverpool eventually lost out as they could not match the offers made by Real Madrid and PSG.

21:11 – PSG look like rabbits in the headlights right now as Liverpool go searching for an opener. TAA is the latest man to scare Les Parisiens defence, but the Ligue 1 side clear. Klopp’s definitely got his men up for this one.

Mbappe has emerged into one of the biggest superstars in world football and played a vital role as his country won the World Cup in the summer.

21:09 GOOOAAALLLL! Our first of the evening for the late kick offs. Garry Rodrigues jinks past a few defenders and fires a low shot from the edge of the area. Galatasaray 1-0 Lokomotiv Moscow.

“Playing at Anfield against a big European club on Tuesday is the ideal way to debut this new kit,” he said, per the Daily Star.

Liverpool vs PSG, player ratings: Who walked tall and who went missing in Champions League opener at Anfield?

21:06 – We’re getting our first glimpse of those Marketing Project Saint-Germain/Jordan shirts at Anfield this evening. What do you reckon? Cool, new kit or cold-hard cash grab?

21:04 – Not much else going on in the early stages, but the atmosphere at Schalke and Liverpool sounds electric. Monaco less so, to be quite honest.

The youngster is confident of his teams chances ahead of the game against last seasons Champions League runners-up.

21:03 – Just to let everyone know that Atléti are playing in that rascal third kit they released a few weeks ago. Not for us.

21:01 – Almost the perfect start for Dortmund, but Marco Reus couldn’t quite get on to the end of a mis-hit backpass.

Liverpool news: Two stars singled out during PSG clash – That is unbelievable

21:00 – And we’re off. Just a reminder, these are the six games we’ll be following tonight:

20:51 – Ol’ Big Ears: how we’ve missed you. The early kick offs have produced two brilliant games on the first matchday. Lionel Messi doing Lionel Messi things with a hat-trick fro Barcelona in their 4-0 win over PSV, whilst Inter scored twice in five minutes late on to beat Tottenham.

20:44 – GOAL INTER. In the very last minute a header from Vecino is flicked into the far corner to send Tottenham home empty-handed. Heartbreak for Spurs. 2-1!

20:41 – As if it was ever in doubt. With just a few moments remaining Messi has completed his hat-trick with a sweet right-foot finish. 4-0 to Barcelona.

PSG are not playing Tuchel football. It may not even be football

20:37 – This the walk the Napoli players will be making tonight in Belgrade. You might need the sound on for this one. *gulp*

Thomas Tuchels task in Europe will not be easy with PSG

20:32 – We’re undecided here in the office whether this is a shocking piece of goalkeeping or just lucky for Eriksen?

20:31 – In the early kick off, Barcelona are currently 3-0 up at home to PSV – thanks to an outrageous free kick from You Know Who and an equally brilliant second by Ousmane Dembélé.

20:25 – The biggest game tonight sees Liverpool host Paris Saint-Germain. Have a look at the quality in these XIs.
