Greece: Retrial ordered in killing of Austin tourist Bakari Henderson
7 suspects in Bakari Hendersons death in Greece face retrial
Seven men suspected in the death of Bakari Henderson in Greece last year, six of whom were sentenced to prison terms of five to 15 years last week, will face a retrial on murder charges, the Associated Press reported Monday.

A prosecutor in Greece ordered a retrial by a panel of more experienced judges to consider the more serious charges the men faced in connection with the July 2017 beating attack that left Henderson dead, the AP report said.

The six men who were sentenced last week had been found guilt of deadly assault, while the seventh was cleared of the charge.

“Losing our beloved Bakari in such a brutal way has been living hell,” his mother, Jill Henderson, told the American-Statesman over the weekend. “We were hoping and praying that justice would be served with the nine defendants being sentenced to life in prison. However, we feel the Greek judicial system failed us when they reduced the charges.”

Henderson, a 22-year-old Austin entrepreneur who had recently graduated from the University of Arizona, was in Greece for a photo shoot for a clothing line he was preparing to launch.

But during a night out on the Greek Island of Zakynthos in July 2017, he was beaten to death by a group of men after a confrontation at a bar.

Officials said a bartender told investigators that Henderson posed for a photo with a female bar employee and a man said “There are a lot of Serbs in the bar. Why are you talking to a black guy?”

The fight spilled out into the streets. Security cameras captured Henderson running away from the men, but being caught near a car. The men swarmed him, delivering punches and kicks as he fell to the ground. He was dead within 30 seconds, according to authorities in Greece.

Hendersons parents, who had attended the most recent trial earlier this month, were planning to return to Austin on Tuesday.

The six men – five Serbian nationals and a British man of Serbian origin – were jailed from five to 15 years last week after being found guilty of deadly assault.

But a public prosecutor Monday ordered the retrial of the six men for murder by a more senior panel of judges. A seventh man, a Greek national cleared last week, will also stand trial for murder.
