England news: This is what dreams are made of – Man Utd loanee Dean Henderson wins first senior call-up
An injury to Burnleys Tom Heaton opened the door for Henderson, who is on loan from Manchester United.

The call-up had been around the corner for some time, and Blades boss Chris Wilder actually mentioned Hendersons England prospects while referencing a mistake against Liverpool.

Hes never played for Manchester Uniteds first team, but has succeeded in loan stints to Shrewsbury Town, Stockport County, and Grimsby Town as well as Sheffield United. This is his second year on loan with the Blades.

The 22-year-old has represented England at age-group level and was part of the 2017 World Cup-winning U20 squad, but only appeared once in the group stages as Freddie Woodman won Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

He was a PFA Team of the Year keeper for the Shrews in 2017-18, and claimed the Championships Golden Glove Award last season.

Heaton, 33, was due to join up with fellow stoppers Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope, his former team-mate at Burnley, for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

The goalkeeper, on loan at Sheffield United from Manchester United, will join up with Gareth Southgates squad at St Georges Park on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Henderson, on loan at Sheffield United from Manchester United, will link up with Gareth Southgates 24-man squad on Wednesday after Heaton returned to Aston Villa after suffering the injury in their win at Norwich City last weekend.

“The decision was taken after Heaton returned to his club for further assessment on an injury sustained during Aston Villas win against Norwich City last weekend,” the FA added in a statement.

England are top of the section with a perfect 12 points from four matches and will qualify for next years finals with a win over the second-placed Czechs, who have nine points from five games. Bulgaria are bottom of the group with two from five.

“This is what dreams are made of… its a dream come true to receive my first England senior call up!!” he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

Henderson, who has represented England from Under-16 to Under-21 level, has impressed with Sheffield United in the past year, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League.

Prior to returning on loan to the Blades, Henderson admitted that he was concerned he may not get a chance to represent the club in the Premier League.

I was always worried, even though I made it clear I wanted it to happen. Everyone wanted it to happen, no one more so than me. But I was getting nervous about things, yes,” Henderson said.

The FA revealed Heaton had returned to Aston Villa for ‘further assessment’ on an unspecified injury sustained during the 5-1 win over Norwich last weekend.

Chris Wilder hails fantastic recognition as Dean Henderson gets England call-up

The longer things went on it was only natural I got concerned. But now its sorted, Im so relieved. Im delighted to come back, everybody knows and can see that.

However, Henderson dusted himself off and kept a clean sheet in the Blades’ next Premier League encounter, which saw them play out a goalless draw at Watford.

Henderson has started all eight of Sheffield Uniteds Premier League matches thus far in 2019-20, with the Blades off to a better-than-expected start in league play.

However, being a part of Englands set up represents a huge step forward in the 22-year-olds career and if he continues on his current trajectory, he might end up challenging Pickford for a regular starting spot in the near future.

Tipped by many as favourites for relegation, Sheffield United have won two, drawn three and lost three to currently sit in 13th place.

The 22-year-old has been ever-present for the Blades at the start of the new season, but he did come under criticism for an embarrassing error which gifted Liverpool a 1-0 win over the newly-promoted side on September 29.

The Blades, however, do only sit two points ahead of 18th-place Everton, who occupy the third and final relegation spot.

The United ace quickly took to Twitter to express his joy after the announcement was made, writing: This is what dreams are made of… its a dream come true to receive my first England senior call up!!!

Henderson will be back in action with the Blades after the break as his side face Arsenal in a home match on October 21.

There is no word on the severity of the injury sustained by the 33-year-old, although England confirmed that it was picked up by the goalkeeper during Villas 5-1 win at Norwich on Saturday. Heaton played the full 90 minutes.
