HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) – A North Huntsville family is coping with loss after a teenager was shot and killed by his brother in what appears to be a tragic accident at an apartment complex on the citys north side.

Huntsville police report that two teenage brothers were involved in the shooting at Magnolia Place Apartments on Winchester Road. It happened around 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The victims 15-year-old brother was the one holding the rifle, and officials say the victim was shot in the head. According to Lt. Johnson with Huntsville Police, the brother was questioned following the shooting and has been released.

Authorities tell WAFF that the gun, a rifle, was left in the home by a friend of the two teenage brothers. The older brother, who is 17-years-old, was killed. The younger brother, who is 15-years-old, was questioned by police and released following the incident. The case will be presented to a grand jury but police dont expect there to be any charges.

Right now, its being handled as a death investigation, said Lt. Michael Johnson with the Huntsville Police Department. It appears to be an accidental shooting at this moment and thats how were treating it, said Lt. Johnson.

Family members declined an interview at the scene. The brothers are not enrolled in Huntsville City Schools, according to their spokesman, meaning they are home schooled or attend private school. Their names were not released because they are juveniles. Relatives could be seen comforting the 15 year old brother as they learned about what happened.

The fatal incident comes on the heels of another recent accidental shooting at an elementary school in Huntsville after a 7 year old found a gun at home and brought it to Blossomwood Elementary, causing injuries. On Thursday, police once again stressed gun safety.

Its turned out to be an accidental shooting with a long gun involved. It just goes without saying about gun safety and not leaving them within arms reach of your children, Lt. Johnson said.

A teenager is dead in whats believed to be an accidental shooting in northeast Huntsville, authorities said.

Lt. Michael Johnson said the shooting involved two juveniles, who are possibly brothers. The victim, whose name hasnt yet been released, was a teenager, he said.

Police said they havent found any evidence that suggests the shooting wasnt accidental. The case is classified as a death investigation.

Criminal charges arent being filed for now, but Johnson said investigators are questioning several people.
