UC Irvine vs. Oregon: How the teams match up in the NCAA tournament South Regional - Los Angeles Times
How a misguided decision by its coach contributed to Kansas States early exit
Weber needlessly sat first-team all-Big 12 guard Barry Brown for the rest of the first half after he picked up his second foul less than six minutes into the game.

Thirteenth-seeded UC Irvine took advantage of Browns absence, erasing a 10-point deficit by holding Kansas States anemic offense without a field goal for the final six minutes before halftime. Brown then struggled to generate any second-half rhythm after sitting so long, finishing a 70-64 loss with just five points and still only two fouls.

Asked at halftime about benching Brown for so long by Turner Sports sideline reporter Rosalyn Gold-Onwude, Weber told her, As long as we were ahead, we were going to keep him on the bench. The Kansas State coach reiterated that stance during his postgame news conference as well.

How Oregon compares to UC Irvine statistically

Weber deserves ample praise for overcoming injuries to guide Kansas State to a share of a Big 12 title this season, but his inflexibility handling Browns foul trouble Friday afternoon was a costly mistake. Fear of Brown picking up a third first-half foul isnt sufficient reason to bench him for that long given the seniors foul history, Kansas States reliance on him and the quality of the Wildcats opponent.

Houston 84, Georgia State 55 — Corey Davis scored 26 points to help the third-seeded Cougars (32-3) rout the 14th-seeded Panthers (24-10) in Tulsa. Houston rolled out to a 15-3 lead in the first five minutes, shot 52 percent to lead 40-31 at halftime, and then opened the second half on a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach. They’ll face either Iowa State or Ohio State on Sunday.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)MoreBrown is an experienced veteran who averaged 2.4 fouls per 40 minutes this season and has fouled out of just three times in the past four years. He had given his head coach no reason not to trust him to play through foul trouble on a day when Kansas State badly needed him.

Buffalo 91, Arizona State 74 — Jeremy Harris and Nick Perkins each scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds in Tulsa, Okla., to help the No. 6 Bulls (32-3) win their 13th straight game and advance to play Texas Tech. CJ Massinburg had 18 points and six rebounds for Buffalo, while Zylan Cheatham scored 22 before fouling out for the Sun Devils (23-11).

A big, experienced team that leads the nation in two-point field-goal percentage defense and excels at altering shots around the rim, UC Irvine in many ways is built to give Kansas State fits. The Wildcats are a poor perimeter shooting team, a flaw further exacerbated by the absence of standout forward and pick-and-pop specialist Dean Wade due to injury.

The highlight, though, came moments later. The 6-foot-7, 285-pound freshman outran 5-foot-11 190-pound Vinnie Shahid for the ball after he tipped it for a steal. Williamson then dribbled behind his back, briefly losing and regaining his balance with a hand on the floor. That cleared room for Williamson to go up and under for a layup.

While driving lanes for Kansas State were scarce against UC Irvines tightly packed zone defense, Brown might have been able to slither through them often enough to help the Wildcats maintain a slight halftime lead. The Big 12s defensive player of the year also undoubtedly would have made some difference guarding UC Irvine perimeter standouts Max Hazzard and Evan Leonard were he on the floor.

Instead Brown sat while UC Irvine gained confidence. Then he couldnt seem to get anything going during a cold-shooting second half.

The Oregon Ducks and the UC-Irvine Anteaters havent played since they last met on December 15th of 2015 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon. The Ducks won the game 78-63 and had a roster made up of players like Elgin Cook, Dillon Brooks, Jordan Bell, Chris Boucher, Tyler Dorsey, and Casey Benson. The Ducks were not ranked in that game. No player on Oregons roster from that game is on this years team. UCI does, however, have one player who did play in that game against the Ducks. Current UCI senior forward Jonathan Galloway came off the bench as a freshman and played six minutes and had four points, four rebounds, and one foul. The 6-foot-10 senior started on Friday against Kansas State and played 26 minutes and scored three points and grabbed three rebounds in the win.

The defining play of the game for Brown arrived in the final minute with Kansas State still within two. Brown tried to kick to teammate Cartier Diarra spotted up behind the arc, but a miscommunication led to the pass sailing into the Kansas State bench for an ill-timed turnover.

I kind of made the wrong pass, Brown told reporters after the game. I didnt read it right. I should have just dribbled it out. Just made the wrong read in a crucial part of the game. Definitely on me. Should have been better.

Playing in the first game of four games at the SAP Center in San Jose, the UCI Anteaters trailed by as many as nine points two different times in the first half. UCI forced KSU to miss 11 straight field goals over the final six minutes of the first half, and on offense, UCI ended the half on a 12-2 run that was capped off by a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 30 apiece. In the second half the Anteaters were able to keep pace with the Wildcats and in late in the game make the plays that were needed to win the game.

Theres no denying Kansas State lost against UC Irvine for a myriad of reasons, not just Weber mishandling Browns foul trouble.

The Wildcats shot poorly from the perimeter, turned the ball over too often and missed Wades ability to draw opposing big men out of the paint. Meanwhile, the Anteaters played with poise, defended relentlessly and hit some big threes down the stretch.

Theres also no denying that figuring out when to sit foul-plagued players isnt easy. Heck, UC Irvine coach Russell Turner benched guard Robert Cartwright for much of the first half with two fouls, and nobody will criticize him for it.

Regular-season standings and statistics are not unimportant, but were giving heavy emphasis to how the teams looked in their first game of the dance because, you know, thats more important at this point.

But with all the data available these days, it seems fair to expect coaches to avoid automatically removing a star with two early fouls without considering the context of the situation.

Webers mishandling of Browns foul trouble during Kansas States surprising first-round exit is further proof of that.

As the weekend opens, where do we stand? Were here to rank every team in the round of 32, with the final five standing out as the fields true title contenders.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — On paper, Oregons matchup with the UC Irvine should be another low-scoring clash of defense and rebounding.

Of course, that was what No. 12 seed Oregons first-round matchup with No. 5 seed Wisconsin was billed to be and the Ducks pulled away for a comfortable win.

According to oddsmakers at BetNow.eu, Kansas State is favored in this game, as the Wildcats are getting odds of -4.5 points against the Anteaters. The over/under total for the contest is listed at 118.5 points. The public betting currently has 72 percent going on Cal Irvine as the underdog. This information is subject to change, however, so be sure to check out our College Basketball Public Betting Page for updated figures on the game.

No. 13 seed UC Irvine upsets Kansas State

The No. 13 seed Anteaters (31-5) have won 17 straight and have potent three-point shooters and the nations leading two-point defense entering Sundays matchup with the Ducks (24-12) at the SAP Center (approx. 6:40 p.m., TBS).

Kansas State isnt a team thats been able to score much and one of their top scorers is expected to remain out. This game is likely to be ugly and low scoring, but UC Irvine has the better shooting numbers. I dont see Kansas State being able to pull away with a limited offensive roster against a good defensive team. I will take my chances on the Anteaters with the points.

No. 13 UC Irvine takes down fourth-seeded Kansas State in San Jose

The No. 12 seed Ducks (24-12) opened as 5-point favorites over the No. 13 seed Anteaters 31-5 on Sunday at the SAP Center, according to VegasInsider.com.

The Anteaters are one of the best defensive teams in the nation, allowing just 63.3 points per game while limiting opponents to 38 percent shooting. Offensively, Irvine averages 72.9 points per game while shooting 45.9 percent as a team. Max Hazzard is leading the team with 12.5 points per game while Evan Leonard is adding 11.1 points per contest.

The strength of both teams is on defense, where they both rank in the top 20 nationally in scoring and field goal percentage defense, though UCI is not as strong at defending the behind the arc.

UC Irvine has better offensive stats than Oregon, but is not as efficient as the Ducks, who vaulted 10 spots in KenPoms rankings with their win over Wisconsin.

The Anteaters are one of the nations best rebounding teams and their depth will be a challenge to Oregon. While UCI has several strong defensive stats, it does not force many takeaways so the Ducks should be able to take care of the ball without much issue.

The teams dont have any common opponents, though they have faced off over the years but not in the last three seasons.
