A healthy Thomas is nearly as good as Irving right now, and the present matters so much for Cleveland with LeBron James propping its title window open. Jae Crowder – a versatile defender who shoots 3s will be essential against the Warriors – more than makes up the difference between the point guards this season. Again, if Thomas is healthy, and it’s a major question when that will be.

LeBron James and company have struggled in the Eastern Conference throughout the regular season before. Last season, they finished second in the East to the obviously inferior Boston Celtics. Although it would be nice to see them blaze through the East, it won’t be as easy as it sounds.

NFL Week 2 picks against the spread: Can you trust the Steelers against the Vikings? The Celtics were 12th in the league in pace last year, according to NBA.com, and Hayward’s ability to get it and go should help Boston pick up the pace a little bit more if Stevens wants to.

Don’t overlook Crowder, an underrated player on one of the NBA’s most team-friendly contracts (three years, $21,917,475 remaining). He’s a significant part of the package. The third player acquired from Boston, rookie Ante Zizic, isn’t nothing.

Doing so means taking the harder path and taking on the odds in a way most wouldn’t think of doing — much like the odds of making it to the NBA in the first place.

But there’s pressure, too. Irving won’t just be replacing Isaiah Thomas, who recently completed one of the best offensive seasons in Celtics franchise history. Because of what Boston surrendered in the trade, Irving will be expected to outproduce Thomas by a considerable margin over the coming years, all while leading the Celtics — who reached the Eastern Conference Finals — to a more competitive playoff showing.

“There’s no hard feelings,” he said. “And I’m sure Ky at some point is going to talk to everybody, the same way he talked to me. Ky’s a regular dude. He’s going to compete and he knows we’re going to be out looking for him when we play Boston. It’s all fine.”

And while Irving wanted to leave the Cavs, his former teammates like Iman Shumpert, don’t hold anything against the All-Star guard.“I wouldn’t necessarily say surprised. I’d say more than anything, (it upped) the respect level I have for him,” Green said of Irving.

“A lot of people would say LeBron is the greatest player in the world, and I don’t say this in disrespect to LeBron — but for Kyrie to say, ‘I don’t want to play with him no more, I want my own thing,’ that’s big because you have to deliver with that.”Preview of the Rockets this season?

Thomas, by contrast, pulled up 36 percent of the time. Most of his offense came within 10 feet of the basket (42.3 percent). The highest percentage of his offense (26 percent) came with zero dribbles at all, followed closely by three-to-six dribbles (25.1 percent). He dribbled the ball seven times or more before a shot 24.7 percent of the time.He played for David Blatt’s team in Turkey, Darussafaka Dogus. He averaged 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 18 minutes a game in that high-level league.

Shumpert says no hard feelings towards Irving for trade request

“What did [Chris] Bosh average in Miami? Kevin averaged almost 20 and 10 with two other All-Stars,” Lue said. “If you are on a championship-caliber team, you have to sacrifice.”

Draymond Green: Kyrie Irving's trade demand from Cleveland Cavaliers shows a lot about character, competitiveness

A point in favor of Westbrook signing the five-year extension now is that it locks in financial stability for six years at age 28. That could be valuable for a player as athletic and dynamic as Westbrook, whose game conceivably could look like very different at age 34.

The Clippers lost their best player over the summer but gained depth all over the roster. When healthy, Gallinari is a lethal scorer who shoots the three well, while Teodosic might already be one of the best passers in the league before he even plays a game. Both players are risks — Gallinari for health reasons and Teodosic for his lack of experience — but they’ll each be key contributors for a team hoping to remain in the top six out West.

Most of us look to Brad Stevens as the coaching savant who will conduct a basketball symphony in which Irving’s offense will flow in concert with the rest of the Celtics. While it’s true that Stevens holds one of the keys to unleashing Kyrie 2.0, he’s not the only one. Much like launching a nuclear attack in the movies, you need more than one key to make this work.At 6’8” and 226 pounds, Hayward has the type of size, length and athleticism of some of the most versatile players in the game. Between his ability to score and handle the ball, Hayward will unlock a number of options for Brad Stevens offensively. For this upcoming season, the Cavaliers have three notable strengths, and they will help them conquer the East and possibly the entire NBA.

The Celtics are in awesome shape. They have a young good team plus three extra first-rounders, including the vaunted Lakers/Kings/76ers pick and a sneaky valuable Grizzlies pick.Rudy Gay at ‘Do-or-Die Point’ in His Career

Though playing with James does have some cons (for example, he semi-regularly unleashes passive-aggressive complaints about his team), the Cavaliers had reached three consecutive Finals. A situation like that normally serves as a powerful draw, but Irving wanted a new challenge.

This is who Thompson is. He rarely ever strays more than five feet from the basket. Of his 437 field goal attempts last season, 76 were in the five-to-nine foot range. Only 22 came from further away. So when he set picks for Irving, he was always rolling to the basket. This leaves no guesswork for the defense, which leads to scenarios like this:

Love’s sacrifices helped propel the Cavaliers to three straight Finals appearances and the team’s first title in 2016. However, for the Cavs to continue the success that they have enjoyed recently, Love will need to be more active and involved offensively.

The Nets’ unprotected 2018 first-round pick is an elite asset. Jae Crowder is a versatile 3-and-D wing on one of the NBA’s most team-friendly contracts. Isaiah Thomas is a star himself when healthy (obviously a major question). Ante Zizic is a nice developmental prospect. And Boston sent another second-rounder to complete the deal.

Remember Kevin Love? LeBron and the Cavs need him more than ever

Neither is Cedi Osman, a 2015 second-rounder signed this year. Signing Kyle Korver to a three-year, $22 million contract (though just $3.44 million of $7.5 million guaranteed the final season) is probably an overpay considering he’s 36. I like Rose much more as instant offense during LeBron’s short rests rather than a starter who neither defends nor shoots 3s well. Calderon doesn’t have a place on this team if Thomas and Rose are healthy, and I’m not sure Calderon would have been signed if Cleveland knew the latter two would later be acquired. Jeff Green has continuously disappointed, so maybe a minimum contract is finally the right salary for him – though if the Cavaliers are expecting a versatile and effective defender, they too might be left unsatisfied.

Nets could diminish value of pick Celtics traded to Cavaliers

A different kind of role could lead to more turnovers for Irving. That being said, he had to make a lot more difficult plays in Cleveland than he will have to in Boston, and a lot of his distribution will be about embracing all the movement involved in the offense.

Celtics have given up enough in trade for Kyrie Irving

There’s reason beyond recency bias for the hubbub. Irving is arguably the better player of the two and is certainly a flashier name. Still, one could argue that, while Irving is the new face of the franchise, Hayward is its most important player.

Boston’s massive overhaul culminated in dealing for Kyrie Irving, a huge trade among the Eastern Conference’s two best teams. The Celtics got the young star, but at a significant cost.

It’s doubtful Zizic will play much of a role in 2017-18.All the outrage, even that from my brother, also masks the fact that Sports Illustrated’s Rob Mahoney and Ben Golliver do outstanding work on their top-100 list. Forget the actual rankings for a second; as far as basketball writing is concerned, the Sports Illustrated list has become an annual must-read. Mahoney and Golliver don’t just slap a number next to somebody’s name. They also put in a load of effort to describe what each player provides.
