Former Little Rock officer who shot suspect at Chick-Fil-A found not guilty

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A former officer with the Little Rock Police Department has been found not guilty of misdemeanor battery in the 2017 shooting of a shoplifting and carjacking suspect.

Pulaski County District Judge Wayne Gruber made the ruling on Friday following a trial for Ralph Breshears that ended last month.

The July 19, 2017 incident had taken place outside the Chick-fil-A restaurant off Chenal Parkway and left Rudy Avila wounded.

Avila, 24, had been booked into the Pulaski County Jail afterward and faced multiple charges that included robbery, criminal attempt to commit capital murder, escape, theft, and violating parole.

Soon after, Avila was sentenced as a habitual offender in a robbery, residential burglary and breaking/entering case and was incarcerated at the East Arkansas Region state prison at Brickeys, where he remains today.
