Doing so will allow property owners to deduct those taxes from their 2017 federal taxes, ahead of the 2018 tax reform plan that will limit such deductions for 2018.

County governments have until midnight on Thursday to make this happen. Cities and town in Erie County notified Channel 2 that they were waiting until Tuesday afternoon for those tax warrants. The Rockland municipal officials made the announcement Tuesday morning, following a conference call of all five town supervisors. The prepayment in Rockland will cover town, county and special district taxes, such as sewer system levies.

County Treasurer Carla de la Pava told the website ARLNow.com that it has received an unprecedented volume of prepaid payments in the aftermath of the tax bill’s passing. De la Pava said the treasurer’s office puts the deposits in “very safe” investments, which earn a small return for the jurisdiction.
