NEWARK, NJ – All Newark Public Schools are closed today due to inclement weather, the district announced early Friday morning. 

The central office opens at 10 a.m., but only essential staff should report to their respective locations, the Newark Board of Education tweeted.

Newark Public Schools originally announced late Thursday night that all schools would have a delayed opening and open at 10 a.m. That announcement came late Thursday night, shortly after the Newark Public Safety director announced the closure of major highways throughout the city.

About two to four inches of snow was expected in the area and a winter weather advisory was in effect until 10 p.m. on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

A city spokesman earlier Thursday evening said 40 plows equipped with salt spreaders were deployed in Newark. 

Another person said a plane that landed from Lisbon was stuck on the tarmac for over seven hours and another airport captive said there was an hour-long delay to board the AirTrain to get back to New York City.

MONTCLAIR, NJ – After announcing on Thursday that Montclair Public Schools would have a 2-hour delayed opening, school district officials decided to close schools for the day.

She said her boyfriend arrived on a flight into Newark Airport at 3:15 p.m. and was still sitting there waiting for her to pick her up.

District officials stated that staffing was te reason for the sudden change. The announcement came around 8:15 a.m. on Friday morning, through the following message:
