Two people were fatally shot and another injured after gunfire erupted Saturday afternoon on a Newark street.
The shooting occurred outside a townhouse-style complex of residences south of Springfield Avenue in the citys Central Ward. Authorities did not immediately identify a suspect in the shooting.
Mercer Street between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Broome Street was closed with yellow police tape around 3:45 p.m.

A witness said she heard at least eight shots while she was inside her home nearby just before 3 p.m.
Officials have not determined a motive in the shooting. Newark officials referred all questions to the Essex County Prosecutors Office, which did not immediately provide more information.
The double killing comes during a year Newark is on pace to have its lowest murder rate in decades. Homicides are down 27 percent through Sept. 8, after falling precipitously the year before.

Police say a third person was injured in the shooting, which took place around 3:30 p.m. on Mercer Street.
