There is no real clear cut answer as to why this is happening.  One logical reason would be that the captors know that the relatives plays professional baseball.  Therefor, the captors may feel that they will be able to make a nice ransom off of these baseball players.  The other issue is of course is the government.  Many of the Major League players claim that the government is not providing the necessary support or protection against these groups.  Hopefully this all gets solved quickly so that the Diaz family can go back to a sense of normality.

Díaz lleva tres temporadas en el béisbol de las Grandes Ligas con los Piratas, alternándose entre las mayores y las menores.

However, the political unrest is not the only issue that is going on in the South American country.  Another big issue that has occurred in Venezuela is the issue of people being abducted. The most recent case is Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Elias Diaz, whose mother was reportedly kidnapped.  This happened while she was at her home in the state of Zulia.  Not much is known as to who kidnapped the young catcher’s mother.  Here is what Pittsburgh Pirates team president Frank Coonelly had to say about the unfortunate event:

Actualmente se encuentra en los Estados Unidos preparándose de cara a la campaña 2018 de la gran carpa.

In response to the snap election, the country could face further sanctions on its oil exports, exacerbating the already high inflation and shortages of food and medicine under the socialist administration. According to analysts, Venezuelans were more likely to flee the country than re-ignite protests after the government’s ruthless reaction last year.

THEY’RE SET: After dealing with an overflow of outfield talent last season, the Cardinals appear set in what they hope becomes one of the best outfields in the National League. Ozuna is set in left field, and Tommy Pham is a lock in center after emerging from years of injury concerns to hit 23 home runs and steal 25 bases in 444 at-bats last season. Fowler is moving to right field entering the second season of the four-year contract.

Diaz, 27, reportedly is in the United States as Pirates’ pitchers and catchers prepare to report to spring training next week. He hit .223 with one home run and 19 RBIs in 64 games last season.

This is not the first time kidnappers have targeted Venezuelan athletes or their relatives. In 2009, then-Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba waited in anguish as his 11-year-old son was rescued from kidnappers. Former Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos was kidnapped in 2011 but later was found alive and unharmed after an air rescue.
