The last two games between Penn State and Pittsburgh have not been close. James Franklins Nittany Lions have outscored the Panthers 84-20 during that time and PSU is a 17-point favorite on Saturday. Pittsburgh must start fast to have any chance and the visitors have some talented athletes capable of causing problems for the Lions. Lets get to the matchups …

Frank Bodani from the York Daily Record asked Penn State coach James Franklin on Tuesday about his starting cornerback duo, John Reid and Tariq Castro-Fields. In those veterans, Franklin said he believes he has some of the nations top cornerbacks. They will star for the Lions against Pitt, Bodani writes.

The Panthers pass rush must make Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford (14) uncomfortable in the pocket and redshirt sophomore tackle Jaylen Twyman (97), a 6-2, 280-pounder, has the attention of James Franklin and Penn States offensive assistants. Twyman registered three sacks in the Panthers win over Ohio last week.

Erick Smith from USA Today has post-Week 2 bowl projections and believes Penn State and Utah are now smelling roses going into Week 3. Smiths projections have Ohio State joining Alabama, Clemson and Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff, but the Lions still playing in a primetime bowl game.

The Lions talented defensive end group was relatively quiet last week against Buffalo but expect them to be buzzing around Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett (8). Yetur Gross-Matos (99) is a factor off the edge in the Lions four-man rush and PSU will also slide him to tackle in certain alignments. Young defensive tackle PJ Mustipher (97) is another lineman to watch.

The Panthers cornerbacks and safeties are known for their aggressive play and the battle between Pittsburghs corners and the Penn State wideouts will be one of the games key matchups, according to Franklin. Two of the top players in the secondary are safeties Damar Hamlin (3) and Paris Ford (12), a couple of athletes Penn State pursued on the recruiting trail.

Ron Cook: Pitt-Penn State meeting will bring nostalgia, sadness

The Lions depth at both the safety and cornerback spots is impressive. JUCO addition Jaquan Brisker (7) is a keeper at safety and cornerback John Reid (29) has an interception in each of the first two games. The top overall player in the secondary, however, might be corner Tariq Castro-Fields (5), who can make a big impact vs. the run or the pass.

Todays Penn State football news headlines feature bowl projections from USA Today and a look at two underrated defenders who might rank among the best in the country.

Both sides have a game-changer in the return game and Penn State cannot let PR-KR Maurice Ffrench (2) get loose. He had two kick return scores last season. French is also a top option in the passing game and he caught 10 passes for 138 yards in the Panthers win over Ohio last week.

Share All sharing options Share All sharing options for: 40 Random Thoughts on Buffalo Reddit Pocket Flipboard Email Heather Weikel/Black Shoe Diaries On Saturday evening, under the bright lights of Beaver Stadium, the Penn State Nittany Lions hosted the Buffalo Bulls in prime time. After a slow start, the Nittany Lions pulled away in the second half and emerged victorious, 45-13. I have several thoughts, which are set forth randomly below.

Pitts passing game in a better place as it preps for Penn State

KJ Hamler (1) is a threat to score on every return and he is averaging 10 yards per attempt on punt returns. The Lions did return a punt for a score last season against Pittsburgh, a 39-yarder by DeAndre Thompkins. Kickoff specialist Jordan Stout (98) and punter Blake Gillikin (93) can neutralize Panthers star returner Maurice Ffrench (2) with big efforts.

Thats when things get really interesting. Because of the Olympic year, trials are being held in April (in State College), which means the US Open (which serves as a trials qualifier) has been moved from spring back to December of 2019 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Penn State Wrestling Releases 19-20 Schedule

Saturday may be the final installment of the in-state rivalry. Lets hope it leaves us with some lasting memories.

The Terrapins are 2-0 and have outscored Howard and then-No. 21 Syracuse by a combined 142-20. Theyll look to keep the ball rolling against Temple this weekend before they face Penn State in a Friday night contest on Sept. 27.

Penn State then heads to Army on Nov. 17 for the Army Invitational, the lone regular season tournament that the Nittany Lions are set to compete at. But well get into that later.

The Terps impressive start, coupled with some unmotivated performances by top teams, have altered the Big Ten power rankings. Bowl projections have also been altered by the dramatic opening weekends of the season, with the Nittany Lions eyeing up some favorable weather come January.

Penn State has nothing scheduled from Dec. 8 until Jan. 10, but I think its safe to expect a number of current Nittany Lions will be competing at the US Open on Dec. 20-22.

Certainly the ugliest moment of the game, there was also plenty of good and bad offered in the Nittany Lions 45-13 victory, with one especially nice stat emerging from the game.

While Penn States rushing-by-committee stats have been impressive, the most talented of the group has had some early-season difficulties and will need to pick up the pace for the Nittany Lions to succeed later in the season.

There has been zero concern elsewhere among the perimeter players, as a dynamic duo of wide receivers have answered any preseason questions about how much of a step back Penn States offense would take.

Despite a slow start that saw the Nittany Lions trail at halftime, Penn States performance was strong enough to move up in the latest AP Poll.

Penn State Football: Transfer To Pitt Sparks Signal Change –

Saturday marks the 100th meeting between Penn State and Pitt. Though recent matchups have produced plenty of memorable moments (both good and bad) and the continuation of the matchup could truly establish it as a rivalry, Saturday also marks the final meeting between the two teams for what could be a long time.

Rather than focus on a future that may not come, well take a page from James Franklins book and focus on one week at a time.

The Panthers are coming off a 20-10 win over the Ohio Bobcats and stand at 1-1 on the season after a season-opening loss to Virginia.
