As publishers come to terms with a new reality on Facebook, the company is attempting to assuage its partners’ concerns. Digiday on Friday published an email from Campbell Brown, Facebook’s head of news partnerships, to what the outlet said was sent to “a couple dozen” publisher partners. It seems evident, however, that public content creators like publishers will now have more pressure to publish posts that spark conversation in order to occupy prime real estate on the news feed, especially if they rely on Facebook for a significant portion of their incoming traffic. Of course, if these creators are willing to pay ad money to promote their content, then it’ll show up on the feed regardless.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg released a lengthy statement on the decision, which reads, in part, “We’ve gotten feedback from our community that public content … is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.” He cites academic and internal research suggesting that social media users are “more connected and less lonely” when they engage with people they care about, rather than passively consuming articles or videos. Zuckerberg expects people will end up spending less time on the platform but that the time they do spend will be more meaningful and beneficial for their “well-being and happiness.” (In November, Zuckerberg emphasized Facebook’s new focus on “time well spent.”)IconHumidityPrecip.WindsOpen settingsSettings

overview paper on Pawn Storm, other actors may also start their own campaigns that aim to influence politics and issues of interest domestically and abroad. Actors from developing countries will learn and probably adapt similar methods quickly in the near future. In 2016, we published a report on C Major, an espionage group that primarily targets the Indian military. By digging deeper into C Major’s activities, we found that this actor group not only attacks the Indian military, but also has dedicated botnets for compromised targets in Iranian universities, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Recently, we have witnessed C Major also showing some interest in compromising military and diplomatic targets in the West. It is only a matter of time before actors like C Major begin attempting to influence public opinion in foreign countries, as well.
