Dayton police Maj. Eric Henderson initially said three of the seven children injured were in life-threatening condition. Police later announced that two of the children had died.

Two children are dead and one was in critical condition Tuesday after a stabbing suspect allegedly stole a police cruiser and plowed into a van at 97 mph, authorities said.

Two children are dead and 10 other people were injured in a Dayton crash involving a stolen police SUV and two other vehicles Monday night, according to news reports.

The “tragic” Monday night crash in Ohio was a “culmination of a series of events,” Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said at a news conference on Tuesday.

As police were investigating the Riverside crash, the man jumped into a stopped police SUV and sped away after a struggle with police, WHIO-TV reported.

The crime spree began when crews were alerted to a man, Lloyd Walters, bleeding from wounds to his head, face, arms and chest, police said.

I jumped out and did my best to get as many children out of the van as I could, he told the channel, adding that it was very difficult to make out what was happening inside the van. There were seven children inside, and one was severely injured, while another was pinned between a door and a seat.

Lloyd Walters said he was trying to take his son, Raymond Walters Jr., for mental health treatment, but his son stabbed him and took off in his truck, police said.

Dayton police Maj. Eric Henderson said that the incident began with a stabbing in another part of town, where the suspected knifeman jumped into a police cruiser to use as a getaway car and eventually crashed it near the Dayton Metro Library into as many as three vehicles, WHIO-TV wrote.

The suspect — Raymond Walters — “gained access” to the responding officers police car before he could be apprehended, Biehl said.

The Riverside officer used a taser, but Raymond Walters still allegedly sped away in the Riverside police cruiser, Biehl said, at one point driving 101 mph.

DAYTON, Ohio (WOIO) – Police say two young girls are dead and at least 10 people were injured after a stabbing suspect stole a Riverside police cruiser and crashed it into a van filled with children.

Then the cruiser — going about 97 mph — struck a Honda Odyssey outside a library with seven children and one adult inside, police said.

Police said the suspect who has a lengthy criminal background, identified as Raymond Walters Jr., stabbed his father in the head on Xenia Avenue Monday evening before stealing his pickup truck.

The collision sent the Honda Odyssey rolling across the street and split the police cruiser into several pieces, authorities said.

Officials from both the Dayton and Riverside police departments held a joint press conference on Tuesday afternoon to update the investigation.
