Police: St. Petersburg man forces his way into apartment, dies after resident stabs him

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Police say a man is dead after a stabbing at a St. Petersburg apartment.

Officers were called to an apartment complex on 77th Avenue North around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to investigators, 23-year-old Zachery Eggleston forced his way into an apartment where a man, his girlfriend and her daughter were sleeping.

Police say Eggleston then got into a fight with the man in the apartment, 29-year-old Jonathan Garcia.

ST. PETERSBURG – A St. Petersburg man stabbed and killed an intruder who broke into his St. Petersburg apartment overnight, police said. The intruder was identified as Zachery Eggleston, 23.

“It became an all-out brawl,” said Yolanda Fernandez with the St. Petersburg Police Department.

During the fight, investigators say Garcia stabbed Eggleston. Both men were taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to police, Eggleston and Garcia both lived in the same apartment complex but did not know each other.

Zachery Eggleston, 23, broke into an apartment at 545 77th Avenue North, where 29-year-old Jonathan Garcia, his girlfriend and daughter were sleeping, according to a news release.

Police believe Eggleston had some kind of interest in Garcia’s girlfriend as he was shouting her name before breaking into the unit, although police aren’t sure how Eggleston knew Garcia’s girlfriend. She told police she also did not know him.

Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Eggleston died from his injuries, the release states.

Officers are still investigating and say Garcia has not been charged at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. Police say Garica has not been charged with any crime at this time.

A St. Petersburg man was stabbed and killed after he broke into another apartment in his own complex, according to reports.

Authorities were called to the apartment in the 500 block of 77th Avenue North, St. Petersburg around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Spectrum Bay News 9.

Police told Spectrum Bay News 9 a man forced his way into an apartment where a man, his girlfriend and her daughter had been sleeping and the two men got into a fight.

“It became an all-out brawl,” Yolanda Fernandez with the St. Pete Police Department told WFLA News Channel 8.

The man who lived in the apartment stabbed 23-year-old Zachary Eggleston, who later died from his injuries, according to WFLA.

Both men lived in the same apartment complex, but did not know each other, according to ABC Action News.

The man who lived in the apartment was also taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries and has not been charged, Spectrum Bay News 9 reported.
