TACOMA, Wash. – A man was struck by a car and killed Monday night while walking in the middle of a highway in Tacoma, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Troopers and medics responded to the scene, on State Route 509 near Alexander Avenue, at about 10:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

The pedestrian, a 34-year-old Tacoma man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers say he was walking in the southbound lanes of the highway just south of Alexander Avenue when he was hit by a Toyota Corolla.

The driver who hit him, a 26-year-old Tacoma man, pulled over and stayed at the scene. He was not impaired and will not face any charges, the State Patrol says.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for about two hours during the investigation but have since reopened.

The driver, a 26-year-old Tacoma man, pulled over and waited for troopers to arrive. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the State Patrol said.
