Anderson’s comments and expectations were so over-the-top and Pollyanna-ish for a traditionally middling program that the potential looms that he and Edwards will end up eventually caving underneath them. These are statements for the Sun Devil club on $1 pitcher night, not when projecting what you want out of your program.

emerged as a “strong candidate” for the Arizona State job. Edwards told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he will indeed interview for the job this weekend.

Certainly, Edwards’ cachet after being an NFL head coach and public figure should help in that regard. He’ll have the task of replacing Todd Graham, who led the team to a 46-31 record and five bowl appearances during his time at the school but stagnated after winning 10 games in his second and third seasons with the team.

Herm Edwards expected to be named Arizona State's coach

Confirmed earlier reports that pending approval of ASU President Dr. Michael Crow, Herm Edwards will be hired as ASU’s next football coach. Deal has been done for days. Edwards will keep current staff.

But taking a coach who hasn’t been on the sideline since 2008 and in college football since 1989 and expecting to magically take a middling program to new heights is simply naïve. This potential hire appears like an over-reliance on a friend and former client more than any type of common sense.Sun Devil Source of the 247 Sports network, Edwards will be accepting the position, probably sometime this weekend when he does meet with folks in Tempe. At this point in the process, all that needs to be done to get the deal in place officially is a sign-off from the university president, Dr. Michael Crow.

When asked if he misses coaching, Edwards said, “Absolutely.”

Did Ray Anderson hire within his comfort zone and fumble the ball in the red zone? Don’t know.

Kansas City Chiefs and he has not been in college since 1989 when he was a defensive backs coach for San Jose State. According to FootballScoop, Anderson’s plan for hiring Edwards includes keeping many of the current assistants, including offensive coordinator Billy Napier and defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, in place and hoping that the 63-year-old coach can elevate the program to Pac-12 championship contention.

The Division I Football Oversight Committee can vote on the proposals as early as January.

“I am very honored and grateful to receive this recognition from the U.S. Olympic Committee and also wish to thank USA Swimming and all of the fans who supported Team USA throughout the year,” Ledecky said in a statement. “Thanks also to my coaches and teammates — all of whom make it such a privilege to compete for Team USA and Stanford.”

Anderson would like to see Edwards keep Napier in his current capacity, a source said. Other on-field staffers from the 2017 ASU team could also be retained, but that would depend on additional dialogue between Anderson, Edwards and perhaps Napier. Anderson also indicated on Sunday that he was pleased by the job of first-year defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, as the Sun Devils made clear progress on that side of the ball in their 7-5 season.

Edwards’ only experience coaching at the college level came as a defensive backs coach for San Jose State from 1987-89.Anderson, according to the sources, doesn’t need to be convinced of Edwards’ candidacy for the job. The two men have known each other for a number of years and Anderson served as Edwards’ agent when he was an NFL head coach. They’ve already had extensive conversations about the job, which Edwards is prepared to accept.

Report: Arizona State likely to hire Herm Edwards as next football coach

There’s been endless speculation about how much Texas A&M could pay Fisher, as Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward hasn’t been shy about the potential financial muscle available at A&M.He also played defensive back in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles (1979-85), Atlanta Falcons (1986) and Los Angeles Rams (1986), registering 33 interceptions.

Some figured that surely Arizona State would not hire someone who has not coached in college since he was an assistant at San Jose State in 1989, right? It looks good to interview someone with that sort of NFL experience, to a point, but this wasn’t seriously being considered, was it?

BREAKING: Herm Edwards is expected to be Arizona State’s next football coach pending approval of University President Dr. Michael Crow

The former NFL defensive back last coached at the college level in 1989, as a cornerbacks coach for San Jose State.“It’s not about you, it’s really not,” Edwards said on the broadcast of NFL Live. “It’s about the game you play. It’s about being a professional. Look, I was made for 10 years when I lined up at corner, (mad) at ever team in the National Football League that didn’t draft me…Go ahead and prove it. Don’t talk about it. Just play. Play football. Asked about the opportunity Wednesday morning on SportsCenter, Edwards said: “It has to be the right fit. Coaching is about fits. And this is a place where [Arizona State athletic director] Ray Anderson is there; I know the man, we have the same kind of philosophy on things we want to do. So I’m going to go down there and have a conversation and see what happens.”

In 2006, a Wall Street Journal article stated he reportedly works out six days a week, getting up at 5 a.m. each time to begin the regimen. Another odd quirk lies in the fact that during his entire NFL coaching career, he never wore team-issued athletic sneakers on the sideline, instead opting to wear dress shoes he himself shined pregame.

In Wednesday’s radio interview, Edwards at times talked as if his ASU interview was just a chat between close friends and at others he talked like this might be a done deal.Well, yeah, probably, but if you want the positives, they’re not too hard to find. Being a college football coach is mostly about finding the right staff, delegating, connecting with boosters and recruits, and essentially serving as a CEO. Edwards might be awful at all of those things, of course, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he’ll succeed at those things!Since then, he has been doing broadcast work with ESPN, which he joined in March 2009. Typically he is seen on various shows such as NFL Live, SportsCenter, and ESPN Radio. Edwards also called the SEC primetime college football games on ESPNU in 2010. He has also worked with high school recruits at the Under Armour All-American game, which used to be televised by ESPN.

Still, this happened so quickly and under the shadow of the dumpster fire that is the Tennessee search that there’s going to be a moment next fall when someone turns on the TV and sees Herm Edwards coaching against Mike Leach late on a Saturday night, and it’s going to be a surprise.

“When you talk, you have discussions with people that you’ve had relationships with and a lot of things are talked about,” Edwards said earlier this week in a radio interview. “For me, where I’m at in my life, everything had to come into play where it was a fit. And I think it’s more important that it’s a fit and this happened to be a fit. I owe [Anderson] a conversation where we could communicate and sit down and talk and we’ll see where it goes.”

Now, I hope I am wrong. I really do. I hope I am made to eat my words. But I do not see how this will work. Edwards was not up for any college jobs or NFL jobs for a reason. This is not an out of the box hire, it is an out of this universe hire. It makes no sense.
