It hasn’t been easy for the national agency to find emergency placement partners due the stigma commonly attached to “pit bulls,” who are one of the most over-represented breeds in shelters. The Toledo society has adopted out “pit bulls” for years. After a triage on the tarmac, including medical evaluation, Berkeley Humane took in 29 cats and 16 dogs, said Thomas Altherr, the organization’s director of development. The animals are settling into their new home and will be available for adoption within about a week, once they’ve been throughly checked over, he said. The storm is, at this point, forecast to leave Florida, pass Savannah, Ga., and then turn inland in a northwest direction and into the Tennessee Valley.

If you don’t have room in your home for a furry companion, you can still help out. The humane society funds all of the care provided to the animals, so if you want to make a donation you can do so on its website.

Donations to help the humane society care for these new animals can be made at toledohumane.org/donation-form. The Toledo Area Humane Society is also looking for new or used dog kennels.
