TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A Toledo Port Authority official says a cargo plane crashed as it was approaching the airport, bursting into flames as it struck several unoccupied vehicles.

Authorities say the crash happened around 3 a.m. just east of the Toledo Express Airport at an auto repair shop. The plane hit multiple unoccupied vehicles at the shop not far from the Ohio Turnpike.

Joe Rotterdam is manager of airport operations with the Lucas County Port Authority. He says the wreckage involves several pieces of the plane over a large debris field.

Rotterdam said its believed two people were aboard. It is unclear if they survived the crash and a search of the scene is currently underway.

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority said the plane was approaching the airport when it went down at about 2:37 a.m. EDT on a road in Monclova, Ohio. Thats just east of the airport, which is 10 miles west of Toledo. Its believed there were two people on board, the agency said.

A Convair 440 Metropolitan cargo plane crashed and caught fire near Toledo-Express Airport, United States, killing the two people on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was a twin-engine Convair 440 that crashed, into the parking lot of a truck repair facility. The agency said the ensuing fire spread to vehicles at the business. 

The privately-owned aircraft, registered N24DR, was operated by two people and was delivering car parts from Laredo International Airport (LRD), Texas, to Toledo-Express Airport (TOL), Ohio, with a stopover in Millington Regional Jetport (NQA), Tennessee.

While approaching its destination airport, the plane crashed on the premises of a truck company and caught fire. The fire has been extinguished. The death of the two pilots has been confirmed, no injury was reported on the ground.

The flight crew did not declare an emergency before the accident, according to local media 13abc. Images from the crash site show that the aircraft was completely destroyed.

On February 23, 2019, an Atlas Air Boeing 767-300 freighter crashed while operating flight 3591 for Amazon. The two crew members and one passenger on board were killed. The reasons behind the crash are still under investigation.
