Worcester Police investigating after man, 7-year-old struck by car
WORCESTER (WHDH) – Police in Worcester are investigating after a man and his 7-year-old niece were struck by a vehicle Monday morning.

According to officials, police received a call for a pedestrian accident on Grafton Street just after 8 a.m.

A 7-year-old girl and a 24-year-old man were hit, according to officials. There was no immediate word regarding injuries.

Officers and paramedics responded to the scene. The man and the young girl were taken to a nearby hospital.

According to police, a gray Nissan Altima was traveling down Grafton Street when it struck the man and girl, who were not in a crosswalk. The vehicle stopped immediately. The driver said he did not see the pedestrians.

Emergency crews responded to the area of 270 Grafton Street for a report of a pedestrian crash.

Child, Man Injured in Crash in Worcester

A 7-year-old and her uncle, 24, were rushed to a hospital. The injuries are serious, but the pair is expected to recover, according to Worcester police Lt. Sean Murtha.

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. near 270 Grafton St., near Mendon Street. The driver of the vehicle, a Nissan, stopped at the scene. Police had not determined if charges will be filed, the lieutenant said.

The child and father were headed to nearby Grafton Street School. Principal Tina Schirner rushed to the scene once she heard what had happened.

In an interview, she said she had contacted a response team to come to the school to assist students with questions they might have about their classmate being injured. She said she also reached out to staff to see if anyone saw the accident.

The child and her uncle were trying to cross the street when the car hit them, according to Randylyn Ali, who said she saw the incident. Ms. Ali said the girl was hit by the Nissan sedan, rolled onto the hood, then fell to the ground and appeared to hit her head. The man was knocked down and fell in front of the car, with the vehicle partly over him, according to Ms. Ali.

Also at the scene was a woman who said she was the child’s grandmother and mother of the man. The woman said her son always walks her granddaughter to school. Wiping tears from her eyes, she said she was unsure exactly what happened.
