Kyle Shanahan has a regret, and an apology after his head coaching debut
Pass offense: F San Francisco 49ers’ Marquise Goodwin (11) can’t make a catch on a deep throw by San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brian Hoyer (2) against Carolina Panthers’ James Bradberry (24) in the first quarter of their NFL game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, September 10, 2017. (Josie Lepe/Bay Area News Group) Brian Hoyer’s debut won’t quell calls for a new QB in 2018, or earlier. He accounted for a fumble and interception that the Panthers converted into their only touchdowns. Poor protection showed in four sacks, including one against Zane Beadles, the league’s lowest-graded guard in Week 1, according to Pro Football Focus. Marquise Goodwin’s drop at the 5 of a third-and-2 bomb was a major gaffe. Pierre Garçon and George Kittle were go-to, six-catch receivers.

Rookie linebacker Reuben Foster was carted off the field in the 1st quarter with an injury that by the looks of it seemed serious. Luckily for the 49ers, Foster returned to the sidelines and tried his best to get back in the game, but he did not. Tests showed he has a high ankle sprain, which is better than the leg fracture many thought he could have had. He will likely be out a month or so.Running backs (10) – Tiki Barber, Earnest Byner, Roger Craig, Corey Dillon, Eddie George, Edgerrin James, Lorenzo Neal, Fred Taylor, Herschel Walker (also KR), Ricky WattersThat Foster was walking without a pronounced limp in the locker room after the game and downplaying the pain suggests his injury is on the milder end of the spectrum. The medium time frame for NFL players to return to action from the injury is 15.4 days, Giza said.Defensive backs (12) – Eric Allen (CB), Steve Atwater (S), Ronde Barber (CB/S), LeRoy Butler (S), *Brian Dawkins (SS), Rodney Harrison (S), *Ty Law (CB), Albert Lewis (CB), *John Lynch (S), Dennis Smith (S), Everson Walls (CB), Darren Woodson (S)Overall, the 49ers allowed 4.6 yards per play. Per David Lombardi, the 2016 49ers only out-performed that against the Rams and the Cardinals when quarterback Drew Stanton was starting. The most notable big play on the day was Russell Shepard’s 40-yard touchdown reception. He found himself wide open on the reception, and then a blown tackle by Jaquiski Tartt and a Shepard spin move resulted in a touchdown.
Steve Wilks didn’t sleep a wink. The big news coming out of the game is the loss of rookie linebacker Reuben Foster to a high ankle sprain. He could miss a month of playing time as he recovers in a walking boot. However, even with plenty of questions, we saw some positives from the defense after Foster left the game.

Reuben Foster expected to miss multiple games due to ankle injury
Reuben was playing well in his 1st regular season NFL game. He played 11 total snaps and had 3 tackles. He made a great play on a pass from Cam Newton, which he nearly picked off for a touchdown. Ray-Ray Armstrong replaced Reuben after the injury and played fairly well. He will likely be the starter until Reuben is able to return, but the 49ers are also looking at options in free agency. The 49ers will be cautious with Reuben Foster’s injury. There is no reason to rush him back. They will make sure he is fully recovered before putting him in game action.
