ESPN hopes to prove critics wrong as 'College GameDay' comes to Times Square Saturday

It's been so long since Virginia Tech's last appearance that the Hokies don't have a guest picker history. GameDay didn't begin regularly inviting guest pickers until the 2009 season. As a result, we're betting the farm on ESPN welcoming someone with strong Virginia Tech ties.9 a.m.: The show opens with Davis saying: "New York City. Big and imposing. And a great American melting pot. And it is just that for college football fans. Doesn’t matter which side of the East River you’re on, no one team dominates. But the history of the sport is rich here."

Chicago? New York City? It’ll be interesting to see if the show expands into even more metropolitan, non-campus areas. (Washington D.C., maybe?)

Was ESPN sending a message to Altice in College GameDay's visit to NYC?

Rather than setup shop on a college campus, the popular pregame show was broadcast from Time Square in New York City.

Why ESPN's 'College GameDay' is in New York City, a town without major college football games

The origins of GameDay coming to New York City go back five years ago or so. Chris Fowler, and Fowler’s wife, Jennifer Dempster, always advocated to Fitting that New York City had an immense number of college football fans given the sheer population size and alumni bases of some schools. I reached Fowler on Friday in Iowa City. He confirmed that it was something he and wife had pitched for some time.

Good Morning America team has helped us to solve problems and give us guidance since they have done so many shows out in the plaza over the years.”

It’ll be a rematch of last year’s ACC title game in Orlando, where Virginia Tech gave eventual national champion Clemson a run for its money in a 42-35 loss.

ESPN’s challenging setup involved a 1 a.m. call on Friday morning to avoid heavy foot traffic in Times Square.

I watched the show a little and could not help but laugh as the sirens were blasting in the back ground. I am sure all the new Yorkers driving in that area appreciated the reduced traffic flow.Taylor’s reply? "It’s all downhill from here."

ESPN’s trademark college football pregame show will air live at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN, with Rece Davis, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and David Pollack and Maria Taylor on set. More details regarding the College GameDay appearance on the Virginia Tech campus will be announced on HokieSports.com, as they become available.

College FootballHerbstreit: TCU could be good bet down stretch According to Herbstreit, the idea to broadcast from the city originated from Jennifer Dempster, a former ESPN fitness personality and the wife of former longtime GameDay host Chris Fowler, who became aware of the local bar scene around college football Saturdays when the couple lived in the area. The idea was floated for a few years, once nearly coming to fruition for a Notre Dame-Syracuse game at MetLife Stadium in 2014, according to Drew Gallagher, the show’s coordinating producer.
