“Joe took a chance coming back to Purdue, and all Boilermakers, and me in particular, are grateful,” former Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke said. “Joe was the best evaluator of talent I have ever seen. His dry wit endeared him to his players, and he knew how to coach and motivate them. Joe Tiller through the Years

He retired after the 2008 season and spent much of his time at his Wyoming home. Tiller had been in poor health for several months, although he was hoping to return to Purdue next week for the Minnesota game, where the school will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tiller’s first Boilers team.

RIP Coach Tiller. Help Turned me from a short fat black kid to an NFL champion. Changed my life, I’ll always love you for that. Rest easy, see you when I get there, coach

Alex Johnson According to reports this morning, former Purdue football coach Joe Tiller has passed away at 74 this morning.

Tiller forever changed the face of Big Ten football upon being hired at Purdue in 1997, showing a wide-open offense could be a success in the black-and-blue Big Ten. And in doing so, Tiller reversed the fortunes of Purdue during a 12-year run that included 10 bowl trips and the school’s first Rose Bowl since the 1966 season.

Tiller served as the Boilermakers’ head football coach from 1997 to 2008. The winningest coach in school history, he posted an 87-62 record, including 53-43 in Big Ten Conference games. Tiller’s 149 games coached are the most in Purdue annals.GOLDEN BOYS: Purdue football head coach Joe Tiller, pals around with defensive end Shaun Phillips, left, and quarterback Kyle Orton, right. Phillips and Orton are sporting the new Purdue uniforms.“Today is a very sad day for me and the entire Purdue family,” Brees said in a Purdue statement. “Coach Tiller was an important person in my life and to so many other guys who played for him. He did so much more than teach us how to win. He taught us life lessons and how to be great leaders and men.”

Start or Sit (NFC Home Games) There was an “Everyman” quality about Tiller whose personality was perfect for slow-paced West Lafayette and conservative Purdue. His house in West Lafayette was nice—but modest. No gated community or five-car garage. Nope. Tiller bought his milk and bread just down the street at Marsh supermarket, cut his lawn and just may even borrow your chainsaw. And Tiller went to church every day. He made it easy by living a short walk from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Sacramento Drive in West Lafayette.

Saddened to just learn of Joe Tiller's passing. He was one of the good guys. Enjoyed each visit with him. @BoilerFootball @wyo_football

We are saddened to report that Joe Tiller has passed away in Buffalo, Wyoming. Condolences to Arnette, Julie, Renee and Mike. RIP.

Tiller’s family issued a statement in July that Tiller had some problems stemming from a genetic disease diagnosed about 20 years ago, and was receiving treatment.
Tiller’s 2000 team was led by quarterback Drew Brees, who flourished in Tiller’s system and continued to be a prolific passer in the NFL.
