— With assistance by Jack KaskeyIf initial social media reports are correct that the alleged shooter, Steven Paddock, used a high-caliber automatic weapon for the mass shooting, that would draw attention to the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which had made such weapons contraband but was allowed to expire in 2004. Those automatic assault weapons have remained legal ever since, despite efforts to renew the ban against them after the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school shooting in 2012.

One bill would make permits to carry concealed weapons valid across state lines, effectively undermining states that have chosen to enact stricter gun laws. The other would make it easier for people to buy silencers, which advocates say would limit hearing damage for hunters and recreational shooters, but which opponents say could make it harder for police to locate gunmen during an active shooting.

The Political World Reacts to the Las Vegas Massacre

My heart breaks for the victims, their loved ones & all those injured in Las Vegas. I call on Congress to show they care by taking action.

Stephen Paddock, killed himself before they entered the hotel room where he is believed to have carried out the shooting.

But if this argument is followed to its logical end, then it will never be the right time to discuss mass shootings, as Christopher Ingraham pointed out at the Washington Post. Under the broader definition of mass shootings, America has nearly one mass shooting a day. So if lawmakers are forced to wait for a time when there isn’t a mass shooting to talk gun control, they could find themselves waiting for a very long time.“It is positively infuriating that my colleagues in Congress are so afraid of the gun industry that they pretend there aren’t public policy responses to this epidemic,” Murphy said in a statement. “There are, and the thoughts and prayers of politicians are cruelly hollow if they are paired with continued legislative indifference.”

Researchers looked at federal data for firearm ownership and homicides of police officers across the US over 15 years. They found that states with more gun ownership had more cops killed in homicides: Every 10 percent increase in firearm ownership correlated with 10 additional officers killed in homicides over the 15-year study period.

You’d think that the deadliest mass shooting in American history would make people think about our gun laws, but we know that it won’t. Nevada has some of the most lax gun laws in the nation. And nobody thinks that 50 dead (so far) and 400 injured is going to change that one bit.

The two gun stocks have fallen sharply since President Donald Trump’s election win in November. Gun sales had climbed ahead of the election on expectations a Democratic victory would increase restrictions on purchases. After Trump’s win, sales of the weapons dropped and so did the shares.
