Gay Olympian Adam Rippon blasts selection of Mike Pence to lead US delegation
nSkating sensation Adam Rippon put himself on a collision course with the White House on Monday after declaring he will snub President Trump’s White House party for Team USA.

The 28-year-old, who won a team bronze medal at his first Olympics on Sunday night, told Daily Mail.com that he would give the traditional gathering a miss in protest against what he sees as homophobia among the country’s leadership.

“If I had the chance to meet him afterwards, after I’m finished competing, there might be a possibility to have an open conversation,” Rippon said in the interview last month. “He seems more mild-mannered than Donald Trump. … But I don’t think the current administration represents the values that I was taught growing up. Mike Pence doesn’t stand for anything that I really believe in.”

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – Vice President Pence is set to arrive here soon to lead the official U.S. delegation to the 2018 Winter Olympic opening ceremony, a delegation that is making a strong political statement against North Korea’s oppressive regime by including the father of Otto Warmbier, the student who died not long after being held in captivity in North Korea.

But that was not the end of it. Pence apparently was so concerned about Rippon’s comments that he then set in motion the attempt to speak with him. Farah did not reply to an email earlier this week seeking comment, but after the story was published, Jarrod Agen, Pence’s deputy chief of staff and communications director, issued a statement.

But on the afternoon on Jan. 17, Pence had another focus: He was so concerned about the criticism he received from U.S. Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon that his staff went to the extraordinary length of asking the U.S. Olympic Committee to set up a conversation between the two – an offer Rippon turned down.

‘I have kind of spoken out a lot and I’d I like to do something positive and not just stay at home.’

He said this would probably mean staging an event of his own to highlight his campaign against homophobia and for gay rights.

People have told me, ‘oh, you’re a lot different than what I thought.’ I say, ‘oh, what did you think?’ They’re like ‘oh, we just thought you were an a–.’ I’m like, ‘oh … yikes.’ I’m just trying to share who I am, my personality … Sometimes I might meet people and they might just not like me, not want to get to know me. And that’s OK. They’re boring as hell anyway.

U.S. figure skater Adam Rippon has spent much of his first week or so at these Olympics sharing his opinions, and inspiring them in others. “I’ve always sort of been unabashedly myself and always spoken my mind and from the heart. And you know what, I think America’s just catching on,” he said. “The other day I was joking to one of my friends. He was like, ‘You’re everywhere right now.’ I was like, ‘I know, I’m like America’s sweetheart.’ And he just laughed in my face because what you think of as sort of the American people embracing, I don’t really think I, on paper, really embody much of any of that sort of perceived persona. And I think maybe that’s what people are kind of latching onto, that my story’s different. That I’m different, and I think on some level we all feel sort of different and when we are embraced for who we are and speaking our minds it’s awesome.

Adam Rippon’s 2018 Ice Skating Routine For The Olympics Is A Mesmerizing Emotional Journey — VIDEO

Rippon was dazzling and the pride of the party in Pyeongchang after he danced and skated through his routine as part of the Team Event to “Arrival of the Birds/Exodus” by The Cinematic Orchestra and “O” by Coldplay.

Rippon missed a spot on the U.S. team for the Sochi Olympics by a lot. Nagasu had finished third in the U.S. championships but was passed over in favor of Ashley Wagner, a highly controversial decision made by U.S. figure skating officials who thought Wagner had better credentials. Despondent and wondering if they’d ever get another shot at the Olympics, Rippon and Nagasu — longtime friends who both skated in Southern California — tried to console each other.

The other US members were Mirai Nagasu and brother and sister couple Alex and Maia Shibitani.

“I know what it’s like to be a young kid and feel out of place, to want to share your ideas and feel like people might not like them. And I spent a lot of time worrying what people thought of me, and as soon as I was able to let go of those doubts, that’s when I was able to find my voice. And I hope that in the process of me sharing who I am with everyone that they can find their voice, too. Honestly it’s really fun to be yourself. It’s really fun to be me.”

Told he had trended as number one on Twitter, he said :’I have always spoken my mind but at same I have always spoken from the heart.

Nagasu contributed to the U.S. team’s success here by becoming the first American woman to land a clean triple axel in the Olympics and only the third ever to cleanly land the jump in competition when she confidently completed the 3½-revolution jump in her long program. Rippon, who trains at The Rinks-Lakewood Ice, contributed an alluring free-skate performance that pushed his Sochi disappointment well back into the past.

Here’s Why Adam Rippon Placed Lower Than Skaters Who Fell at the Olympics

‘I have a great story. I want people to get to know me, but today it is about this awesome group of people (his US team mates ).

Zhou is quiet but articulate and thoughtful. The most memorable aspect of being told he had made the Olympic team was that it elicited an embrace from his mother, who gave up her job with Oracle to guide his figure skating career even though that meant leaving his father behind in the Bay Area. They lived in apartments without hot water and air conditioning so they could afford to pay for his skating lessons.

Rippon marveled the crowd on the ice, earning a 172.98, and he finished third in his category.

Figure skating is an individual sport. Rivalries can be fierce amid the glittery sequins and yards of mesh. But these skaters learned to put their differences aside to support each other, giving each other strength to excel on a stage that can be intimidating. Their similarities became more important than the differences in their style or age or dress.
