Although Saltzman wrote for Sesame Street for many years, its worth noting that he did not create the characters, he merely wrote for them and several others in his long career. He also never made a canonical declaration, only gave insight into his writing process. Still, many took his words as confirmation of the long-running rumor that the characters are more than just roommates.

It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are gay. It's fine that he feels they are. They're not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only gay? There's much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness.

“They’ve got motherf—ing Ernie and Bert trending on Twitter, because grown-ass, sick lunatics are worried about the sexual orientation of puppets made for teaching and educating children,” Rapaport began his diatribe. “Let Ernie and Bert rest. They’ve been doing this sh– for a long time; they don’t need to be trending on Twitter! Why can’t they just be friends, good friends? Why are you friend-shaming them?”
