Last year, McRaven, who did not make an endorsement in the 2016 presidential election, called Trumps lambasting of the news media possibly “the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime” during a speech at the University of Texas. A four-star admiral who retired from the Navy in 2014, McRaven also wrote an August op-ed article calling on Trump to revoke his security clearance after the president pulled former CIA Director John Brennans clearance.

“OK, hes a Hilary Clinton backer and an Obama-backer,” Trump added before Wallace said McRaven was a Navy SEAL for nearly four decades.
As part of Trumps effort to resolve the 17-year war in Afghanistan, Washington has escalated pressure on Pakistan, whose assistance the U.S. believes is needed to compel the Taliban to agree to negotiate with the government in Kabul.

Trump: Pakistan Has Not Done A Damn Thing For Us
“Living in Pakistan, beautifully in Pakistan in what I guess they considered a nice mansion, I dont know, Ive seen nicer,” he continued. “But living in Pakistan right next to the military academy, everybody in Pakistan knew he was there. And we give Pakistan $1.3 billion a year and they dont tell him, they dont tell him … for years.”
“They took him down but — look, look, theres news right there, he lived in Pakistan, were supporting Pakistan, were giving them $1.3 billion a year, which we dont give them anymore, by the way, I ended it because they dont do anything for us, they dont do a damn thing for us,” Trump said.
McRaven responded on Sunday, telling CNN that he did not support Clinton or anyone else in the 2016 election. He emphasized that partisanship did not play a role in his career.

“I am a fan of President Obama and President George W. Bush, both of whom I worked for,” he told CNN. “I admire all presidents, regardless of their political party, who uphold the dignity of the office and who use that office to bring the nation together in challenging times.”

The former Navy SEAL also added that he stood by his comment that Trumps attacks on the press are “the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime.”

Retired Navy Adm. William McRaven lashed out at Donald Trump again Sunday, saying his behavior is the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime after the president criticized McRaven for failing to bring Osama bin Laden to justice sooner.
Trump disdainfully dismissed earlier criticism from McRaven, who oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL mission that killed bin Laden, when Chris Wallace questioned him about it in an interview that aired earlier in the day on Fox News Sunday.
Hillary Clinton fan, Trump snapped, cutting off Wallace. Hes a Hillary Clinton backer and an Obama-backer, and frankly … wouldnt it have been nice if we got Osama bin Laden a lot sooner than that?
Trump says Pakistan doesnt do damn thing for US
An angry McRaven responded on CNN: I did not back Hillary Clinton or anyone else. I am a fan of President Obama and President George W. Bush, both of whom I worked for. I admire all presidents, regardless of their political party, who uphold the dignity of the office and use that office to bring the nation together.
He added that he stood by his comments in a speech early last year at the University of Texas in Austin, noting Sunday that the presidents attack on the media is the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime. When you undermine the peoples right to a free press and freedom of speech and expression, then you threaten the Constitution and all for which it stands.
In an interview on CNN Sunday, retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling characterized McRaven as an unbelievable patriot and a true servant of the Constitution.
Trump fires off a new tirade at Pakistan
Asked about Trumps comments on McRaven, Hertling responded: Having someone like the president of the United States, a man that holds an office thats supposed to represent all people and who says he supports the military, to just dismiss this great American hero as a guy who was a Hillary Clinton lover — which is patently not true — is just really disgusting. But its just another day in the life of the Trump administration I guess.
Hertling also slammed Trumps failure to honor veterans at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day.
Its a factor of leadership, he said. Leaders know what to do, where to be, what things to say. And in all three of those things, I think the president is currently a failure.
